What's it like to be a Technical Lead?
Technical Leads are employed to manage the delivery of technical projects, usually in the context of computer software. They manage teams of Developers and work closely with senior managers to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget. Technical Leads often have a background in software or web development, but also have strong communication skills and employ a broader managerial skillset. They work with team members and stakeholders to manage software projects from the concept stage to release. They are employed by IT–focussed organisations in a broad range of industries.
Tasks and duties
- Managing project scope before, during and post–delivery.
- Working closely with Developers, DevOps Engineers, System Engineers, Account Managers and Product Managers.
- Determining requirements and providing project estimates and timelines.
- Overseeing deployments and new releases.
- Reviewing code.
- Identifying and removing bottlenecks that impede the progress of projects.
- Providing leadership, support and motivation to technical team members.
- Ensuring project stays within budget and identifying scope creep.
- Solving issues and developing workarounds and alternative solutions.
- Ensuring the regular delivery of projects and products in accordance with Agile methodologies.
How to become a Technical Lead
Technical Leads usually have a relevant qualification and extensive industry experience, as well as experience working with Agile methodologies.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in a relevant field, such as computer science, IT or software development.
- 2.Consider enhancing your skills and knowledge by completing IT certifications, such as Project Management Professional or Agile Project Management Foundation.
- 3.Build key technical skills by starting off in a role that trains you in coding and programming, such as Software Developer. Experience in coordinating or managing development projects is also beneficial.
