What's it like to be a Travel Agent?
Travel Agents plan, budget and book trips for business clients and tourists. The role of a Travel Agent is to gain an understanding of the preferences of a traveller and to source the best flights, transport, accommodation, tours and entertainment activities to meet those needs.Did you find this video helpful?
Tasks and duties
- Booking airline tickets for domestic and international travel.
- Making travel and accommodation reservations.
- Suggesting itineraries and travel routes based on costs and availability.
- Managing all aspects of the booking process including deposits and final payments.
- Providing information about tours and places of interest.
- Preparing travel documents and itineraries.
- Promoting travel packages on behalf of cruise lines, resorts and speciality travel groups.
- Advising on visa requirements,vaccinations, and travel insurance.
How to become a Travel Agent
While there is no longer a licensing requirement to become a Travel Agent, since 2014 the Australian Federation of Travel Agents (AFTA) has set up a self-accrediting scheme, known as the AFTA Travel Accreditation Scheme (ATAS), which sets out explicit requirements for becoming an accredited Travel Agent.
- 1.Complete a Certificate III in Travel (SIT30216). You may also study a travel course at a diploma, bachelor or masters degree level, which may include a business management component.
- 2.Gain accreditation with the AFTA Travel Accreditation Scheme (ATAS).
