Support Workers are vital carers for vulnerable individuals and their families. Support Workers provide practical support, such as helping with household tasks, filling out paperwork, administering medication and personal care. Tasks and duties
- Helping with household tasks.
- Providing personal care support.
- Administering medication.
- Helping clients learn new skills.
- Supporting clients to start employment.
- Doing grocery shopping and preparing meals.
- Working with doctors and therapists to ensure support.
- Demonstrating and supporting new life skills, such as budgeting.
- Adjusting and adapting communication and body language to suit client needs.
- Supporting clients to develop new hobbies and interests.
- Transporting and accompanying clients to appointments.
How to become a Support Worker
It’s possible to work as a Support Worker without formal qualifications, however employers may prefer candidates with a relevant vocational qualification such as a Certificate III in Individual Support (CHC33015).
- 1.Complete a Certificate III in Individual Support (CHC33015) or a Diploma of Community Services (CHC52015) at a TAFE or Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
- 2.Hold a current, unrestricted driver’s licence. Some employers may also prefer you to hold specific licence types and/or have access to a vehicle.
- 3.Ensure you have up-to-date immunisations as required, and complete certifications and checks such as a First Aid Certificate, Working with Children Check, Police Check and/or NDIS Worker Screening Check.
