What's it like to be a Childcare Worker?

Childcare Workers work provide care and supervision for children. They work in a variety of private and government settings including residential homes, childcare centres, kindergartens, hospitals, crèches and women’s shelters. They supervise and support children in their educational and recreational activities.

Tasks and duties

  • Supervising the daily routine of children including educational, recreational and hygiene regimes.
  • Assisting in the preparation of materials and equipment for children's education and recreational activities.
  • Managing children's behaviour and supporting children's social development.
  • Planning and coordinating activities for children.
  • Entertaining children through reading and playing games.
Childcare Workers contribute to the social and educational development of children under their supervision by participating in activities such as reading and playing games. They also manage children’s behaviour when alone and interacting with other children and supervise children’s personal hygiene routines.

How to become a Childcare Worker

SEEK Learning
The minimum qualification to become a Childcare Worker is the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC30113). A Working with Children Licence is also required. First Aid training is recommended, although not mandatory.
  1. Hold a current Working with Children Licence. You can apply online, and licensing is mandatory for anyone engaging, or intending to engage in child-related work as an employee or volunteer with children under the age of 18.
  2. Complete a First Aid certificate including CPR, Anaphylaxis, and Asthma Awareness training.
