What's it like to be an Enrolled Nurse?

An Enrolled Nurse (commonly referred to as an EN) provides nursing care under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN).

Tasks and duties

  • Observing, measuring and recording patients' vital statistics and reporting changes in patient's conditions to RNs and doctors.
  • Providing physical and emotional support to patients and their families.
  • Assisting with personal hygiene tasks such as bathing, showering and dressing.
Depending on the nature of the work, ENs may be either directly or indirectly supervised. ENs provide nursing support to patients in a variety of health, aged care, welfare and community settings.

How to become an Enrolled Nurse

A Diploma of Nursing HLT54115 is the minimum level of study required to become an Enrolled Nurse in Australia. These qualifications generally take 12 months to two years to complete and are open to anyone 18 years or older who has successfully completed year 12 or has a current Certificate III with relevant industry experience, or a Certificate IV or higher.
  1. Complete a Diploma of Nursing at TAFE or a private registered training organisation.
  2. Apply to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) to practice as an EN. Registration must be renewed annually.
  3. Explore opportunities for further study (such as the Advanced Diploma of Nursing HLT64115, which is also delivered through TAFE or private registered training organisations).
