What's it like to be an Estimator?
Estimators provide approximations of the time, money, materials and labour required for a specific project. Many Estimators work in the building and construction industry.
Tasks and duties
- Preparing and delivering estimates and budgets, auditing projects and overseeing overall expenses
- Negotiating and confirming prices and rates with sub-contractors and suppliers.
- Conducting studies to ascertain the value and feasibility of a project before proceeding.
How to become an Estimator
Education pathways will vary depending on what industry you’re looking to work in. However, most Estimator roles require practical experience and a qualification.
- 1.Gain experience via a relevant apprenticeship with a registered practitioner. This will include hands-on experience and classroom-based theory.
- 2.Or, alternatively complete a certificate or diploma in estimation, such as a Certificate IV in Building Project Support (Estimator) (CPC40320).
- 3.If you are working on any construction site in Australia, you’ll need to apply to get a White Card through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
