Tasks and duties
- Prepare legal forms, contracts, reports, briefing notes and paperwork for lawyers or managers.
- Transcribe dictation of letters, meetings and other memos, ensuring that documents are free from typographical or grammatical errors.
- Organise and maintain client files and documents, adhering to privacy and confidentiality guidelines.
How to become a Legal Secretary
While it’s not compulsory to have a legal background or qualifications to become a Legal Secretary in Australia, it can help with employment opportunities.
- 1.Undertake a qualification in legal studies, such as a Certificate IV in Legal Services (BSB42215). These courses are usually open to those who have completed Year 10 or who have at least one year of relevant vocational experience.
- 2.Explore opportunities to further your career; you may want to undertake additional study such as a Diploma of Paralegal Services (BSB50720) in order to take on further responsibilities; or consider undertaking a Certificate in Paralegal Practice to become a Paralegal.
