What's it like to be a Pathology Collector?

Pathology Collectors work for medical laboratories performing a range of tasks including extracting, collecting and labelling blood, urine, faeces, swabs and other patient samples. They also prepare samples for delivery by courier to a laboratory. Pathology Collectors usually work in hospitals or suburban collection centres and may travel to the homes of patients who are housebound.

Tasks and duties

  • Guiding patients through the sampling process.
  • Communicating with people of all ages with a broad range of ailments.
  • Using hypodermic needles to draw blood.
  • Using swabs to collect mucus or DNA samples.
  • Following procedures to ensure all samples are accurately labelled and archived.
  • Preparing and delivering samples within set timescales.
  • Adhering to strict hygiene regulations.
  • Keeping meticulous records of patient history and all procedures.
Pathology Collectors employ a high level of empathy, communication and customer service and use discretion when performing their duties, as well as keeping meticulous records for every patient. They work in medical laboratories in public and private hospitals, clinics, and for large specialist pathology providers.

How to become a Pathology Collector

It is possible to work as a Pathology Collector without formal qualifications, however employers may prefer individuals with qualifications in the field or with relevant experience in another medical discipline. A full driver’s licence is usually required in order to work from off-site locations.
  1. Achieve and maintain a full driver’s licence.
  2. Achieve and maintain a First Aid Certificate.
  3. Look to acquire a work placement in a laboratory setting during your education. This will provide you with relevant experience as well as guidance and mentorship from experienced laboratory workers.
