What’s it like working at Parks Victoria?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees at Parks Victoria appreciate the passionate and dedicated colleagues, particularly the rangers and on-ground staff who care deeply about conservation and the environment. The work/life balance is excellent, with flexibility to work from home and adjust schedules as needed. Staff value the meaningful nature of the work, knowing they are contributing to the preservation of Victoria's parks and natural heritage, and enjoy the opportunity to work in beautiful outdoor locations. There are also opportunities for professional development through promotions, secondments, and independent project work.

However, there are some potential challenges, including the need for stronger senior leadership and management with clearer vision and strategic direction. The technology and systems are dated and require modernisation to improve efficiency. The workplace culture, particularly in head office, has faced challenges due to recent organisational changes. Bureaucratic processes and red tape can slow down decision-making, though efforts are being made to address this. Additionally, budget constraints and limited resources can create gaps between capabilities and expectations, and the organisation can sometimes be resistant to new ideas and change.

An organisation that truly supports work/life balance but has its challenges
The good thingsIn my time at Parks Victoria, I've been really grateful for the work/life balance it has provided and being able to work flexibly. It's an organisation that has plenty of down-to-earth, ethical people who care about the environment and are passionate about making a change. There are opportunities to grow and develop up to a certain level. You can also get a chance to visit some of the iconic parks if you're keen and the staff out in the parks are always so welcoming.
The challengesDespite my overall positive experience, Parks Victoria does have it's genuine challenges. In recent times, it has gone through plenty of change which has impacted the wider culture. Thanks to the new CEO, business processes are now improving with the recent reduction of red tape, though the HRIS systems are still outdated and require updating. A key challenge has been working under Senior Leaders who have either not been capable or are clearly not a culture fit for Parks Victoria. A renewal of the Executive Leadership team provides hope for the future.

Really exciting public function and passionate staff let down by poor leadership and lack of funding
The good thingsParks Victoria has such an important and exciting role and has so many amazing landscapes, volunteers and staff.
The challengesMost of the senior leaders over the past five years were really average in their roles, ignored staff and stakeholder feedback and Parks Vic for almost all staff became an unworkable environment resulting in high staff turn over and significant stakeholder anger. Poor behaviour was not called out, toxic staff were recruited and retained and significant intervention from state government stifled any level of staff efficiency and function. The organisation has lost its direction and sense of purpose and became caught up in noble causes and issues not key to successful park and land management. This along with significant population and park visitation growth combined by ever decreasing budges meant a huge gap between staff and visitor expectations and what we could do.
