What’s it like working at Malthouse Theatre?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees at Malthouse Theatre appreciate the ample resources available, including materials, tools, templates, props, and costumes, as well as the great team with common goals and a supportive environment. However, there are potential challenges, such as concerns about management, with indications of a disconnect between management and front-of-house staff, as well as a lack of direction and communication. Additionally, the work-life balance can be challenging, with long hours and no weekends off. There are also indications of insufficient staffing levels and low salaries at the theatre.

The friends are great, the company culture is not.
The good thingsA good starting point early in your career to get your foot in the door of this industry but not something to work towards.
The challengesThis has got to be the most toxic environment I have ever worked in. I started working here in 2017 for 3 years. Everyone calls each other family (red flag language), but that’s just an excuse to work yourself dry for very little pay. This is amateur theatre dressed up as a “professional” theatre company. Some management staff stuck in the past, and stuck in their ways need to move along. Terrible, out of date managers who are single handily responsible for failure after failure across the organisation but of course they blame the staff below them to protect themselves. If you are thinking of taking a job here, think again.

The vibes are immaculate downstairs but the management must learn to respect the whole team's experience. Learn from those below you who have more experience.
The good thingsThe FOH staff at the Malthouse are some of the best in the industry, a true joy to be a part of this team. I find so much joy in being a part of this team, cause in the FOH everyone has everyone else's back because in FOH everyone is diversely talented in the arts industry with enough skills to fill the building.
The challengesThe management needs orienting, they are totally disconnected from what the FOH staff do and the general operations of the business at FOH(which is the customer-facing roles that make the profits), but do love to come down to FOH to tell you how to do your job even if they've never worked in hospitality in their lives. Also getting a shift is like getting blood from a stone, they will overstaff in March/April for comedy festival then as the business slows down the rest of the year, you have to be able to fall back on multiple other jobs cause you with go from 40 hours a week during comedy festival, to maybe a single shift of 3hours length in a fortnight.

    Great family of professionals
The good thingsAlways had a large resource pool to draw from. Materials, tools, template documents, props, costumes. They have a department for everything and everyone’s really wonderful.
The challengesLong nights and no weekends are always tough. The work life balance is hard.
