What’s it like working at Animal Emergency Australia?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees appreciate the welcoming and supportive team culture at Animal Emergency Australia, with colleagues described as warm, inclusive, and skilled. The company demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning and professional development, with regular training opportunities and a focus on improving patient outcomes. Staff value the diverse and interesting caseload, which provides valuable emergency nursing skills, as well as the company's authentic and transparent approach to leadership. Many employees also appreciate the open communication across departments and feel that their voices are heard.

However, there are some potential challenges, including variations in management support and communication across different locations and departments. Team shortages and heavy workloads can be demanding, though this is recognised as an industry-wide issue. The afterhours nature of emergency work can make work/life balance difficult, with night shifts and limited breaks during busy periods. Some new staff have found that initial training and support could be more structured, and front-facing staff manage highly stressed clientele during peak periods with the challenges of emergency triage processes.

A dynamic, inspiring and unique workplace
The good thingsThe culture of constant personal and professional development drives an excellence I've not seen at many workplaces during my career to date. Put plainly, it's inspiring. The leadership teams juggle many conflicting priorities, however I can honestly share that they have constantly prioritised team wellness.
The challengesIndustry wide pressures such as client expectations, cost of living crisis, and vet and nurse shortages.

    Disappointing experience after medical disclosure
The good thingsThe team on the floor were welcoming and lovely. The building is purpose built and fit for purpose
The challengesMy experience with Animal Emergency Service Hawthorn raised concerns about management culture and decision-making processes. While some communication occurred by email, key decisions affecting my ability to work were made without consultation, and repeated requests for clarification went unanswered for extended periods. Despite providing medical certificates confirming work capacity, my shifts were removed. I was able to continue performing the same role safely at another organisation using established self-management strategies. At this workplace, those strategies were deemed inadequate, with no flexibility or engagement to explore alternatives. This approach risks discouraging staff from disclosing injuries or health conditions, particularly when exclusion rather than consultation is the default response. Casual workers are still entitled to basic procedural fairness when decisions result in loss of income.

Do not work here if you’re looking for management that will support you in your troubles.
The good thingsI really enjoyed meeting all the patients and wildlife that would come through.
The challengesThe management is awful and needs major improvement, especially the Nurse Manager. Very unprofessional and they do not help with your troubles whatsoever. They blame the attitude and the way people speak to each other on the “stress” of the job. They pass along EAP and that’s the definition of their job done.
Hospital AdministratorThank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We’re sorry to hear that your time at AES Underwood did not meet your expectations. We are committed to fostering a supportive, respectful, and growth focused workplace for all team members. Feedback—positive or negative—helps us understand where we can improve. We can assure you that we take concerns like yours seriously and continuously review our processes, communication, and culture to ensure our teams feel valued and heard.
