They treated having a microwave in stores like the moon landing. Trust the reviews, save your sanity
The good thingsThe day to day is what you make of it. If you strive off chaos it can be a lot of fun, you don’t have a moment most days and when you do it’s usually quickly filled with a new directive or the training your staff should have had adequate coverage for in their first shift. However the company struggles to prioritise this. I enjoyed a lot of the people I worked with but most of those I started off with a decade ago have faced the same issues as I had and been shut down in the same manner. They had the brilliant idea of doing surveys but only seemed to action the items that didn’t hurt their already ample profit margins. I genuinely liked my first few years working here, when they invested in their teams and people.
The challenges1. Head office team members and directors need to spend a few days in store throughout the year to feel the pressure of the workload and expectations that they are putting on us. (Love to be a fly on the wall) 2. Stop spending money on “systems” and actually invest in your teams. It’s great that you can tell us how many sales we missed out on based on AI cameras, but any good manager could tell you we are missing the sales because the 14 year old we had to put on over the weekend to save wages, sent a customer away because the manager is to busy putting out fires, changing prices and running inventory, to be able to adequately train them. 3. Drop this if they want to leave, let them, for your solid managers. Instead listen to them and let them help you get ahead in the industry instead of falling behind. But also maybe don’t listen to the ones with multiple internal complaints against them.(or try to hire them again) There’s more but I’ve hit a word limit.

Laid back and great for a summer job.
The good thingsIts very easy and laid back, definetly better for someone who already has customer service experience.
The challengesI didn't really get trained so i mostly relied on my own judgement.

Do not work here unless you need experience for a better job
The good thingsThe 30% discount and that the “experience” got me a better job so I could quit
The challengesAs a casual, they give you little to no training. I got a 5 minute tour of the store and was told to go and help customers after that (this was my first job and I had no clue how to do it). Management were extremely passive aggressive and didn’t give shifts until 2-3 days beforehand and got mad when you said you couldn’t do it, also they gave no warning and the app didn’t tell you you got a new shift so you had to check every day. The employees were very cliquey and not welcoming at all to casuals (especially junior casuals even though the manager was like 19??), and every junior I spoke to had the exact same experience. If you asked for help from a manager or another coworker they would roll their eyes at you and reluctantly help you, and they wouldn’t let us use the register so customers would get mad when we wouldn’t help them and there was a register available then I would get yelled at for not helping them. Overall bad experience

DO NOT WORK AT CITY BEACH CANELANDS- Store manager is disrespectful and treats junior staff members
The good thingsThe team you work with
The challengesRegional does nothing with complaints from team members. They act like they care but they truly don’t care about how staff members feel unless you’re a store manager.

Not worth the time or the energy
The good thingsMet some great people, life long friends
The challengesInsane work load. Extremely money hungry company, you are just a number to them, they give out no additional hours but won't hesitate to give out 10 extra tasks a day on top of the already unmanageable work load. Do not work in Visual Merchandising if you want to be recognised as an equal. VMs are the back bone of the business and store presentation/sales, there is 1 VM to 4 sales managers per store, and the VM is paid the least, whilst arguably having the biggest individual work load. On top of this, you will work with staff members who have had upwards of 10 file notes on their record and will never actually be punished for this, in fact as long as City Beach is your only personality trait, you'll easily be promoted no matter how bad your track record is. It took me far too long to realise I wasn't being treated the way | deserved. Also, get everything in writing, they will tell you you're getting a raise and not follow through cause they 'forgot'. A lot of lessons learnt.

    A complicated work environment.
The good thingsI loved the other staff and if you work here you will need to work well in a team envrionment.
The challengesInconsistent management, they could not keep 'higher' management for the life of them and young staff members such as 16 - 17 year olds were given management jobs, keys to safes, shift management, etc with minimal to no training.

The good thingsLower staff is cool just work as a causal they expect nothing of them.
The challengesManagement at a high level is lack lustier and expect you to do everything there way. I was forced to pick going to my brothers wedding over having a Job at the company because it happened over stock take weekend. The only Retail store I have worked that does not include commission for sales over $300.

Amazing and definitely got me out of my comfort zone!
The good thingsBeing able to work within a team of very friendly people, helping customers find what they are looking for and building friendships.
The challengesThere is not much that I do not enjoy, most of the tasks that get asked of me are quite enjoyable but in every job there is always going to be things you dread doing at work, you just learn how to adapt.

Avoid this job at all cost. If you're thinking about applying for the Retail Supervisor position—RUN, lasted a month
The good thingsThe staff was nice but not nice enough to make the regionals bearable
The challengesThe job title is completely misleading. You're basically a visual merchandiser being pushed to hit impossible targets with no support. The regional managers are awful some of the worst people to work under. They expect you to operate like you're in some high-pressure corporate role! AVOID

Do not work here, horrible experience.
The good thingsYou can get a many shifts. Good if you don't want to talk to anyone other than costumers.
The challengesFrom my first day till my last all members were treated the worst Ive ever seen, by the higher members of the store. Screamed at when something not on your behalf goes wrong, nobody talks to anyone, barely able to ask questions. Only time they are nice is when your walking out the door.

Cockburn Central WA 61641 to 2 years in the role, former employee
I left a retail store to venture out and see what something else was like and I wish I never did. The managers are overworked and highly underpaid. Area managers only ever on the phone when Instore which isn’t great for customer experience The absolute stress that is put on these somewhat young teens to hit sale target and report back hourly it is absolutely disgusting. Being micromanaged and watched by head office in Brisbane. Area manager would call the store and ask to speak to me ( phone is located at register) and yes not face to face a phone call!! Only to be written up for being late on my first week, even tho I live in rockingham and I worked in Rockingham previously so driving to cockburn was out of the ordinary for me. I think it is very unprofessional having an area manager who is married to a people and culture coordinator in the same region I’m sorry but I don’t like being the topic of breakfast in the morning. Some really big business flaws
    The good thingsDiscount was alright
The challengesArea managers only ever on the phone when they are in store not appealing to the customers eyes No culture Micromanagement is ridiculous No empathy Disrespectful

A well-paying job with great facilities, paid breaks, and a positive work environment.
The good thingsCity Beach provided a great work environment with paid breaks, excellent kitchen and bathroom facilities, and a welcoming reception. The free weekly treats were a nice bonus, and the pay was competitive for the role.
The challengesOne challenge was that some shifts could get quite busy, especially during peak hours, making it physically demanding. Additionally, scheduling could sometimes be inconsistent.

    Poor workplace culture.
The good thingsFellow team members were lovely, customers were easy to get along with!
The challengesThe expectations set for the team were entirely unrealistic, with unsustainable goals and demands placed on employees, eg the expectation to security tag 100+ items of stock per hour. Regional managers were among the most difficult individuals I have encountered, fostering a work environment where team members were often fearful of attending work due to the constant threat of reprimand, despite receiving inadequate training. Shifts were frequently offered the night before, with an implicit expectation to accept them or risk being excluded from future shifts, placing undue pressure on employees and significantly impacting their social lives.

terrible, I quit after a month that's how bad it was.
The good thingssome of the people at the store were friendly and the staff discount was pretty good.
The challengesThe regional managers were terrible to deal with and the process of how they do things around the store is truly terrible, there was no support for me when I started and no explanations or help while I was learning a new role.

I ended up becoming ill from the constant stress I was put under with my role. Internal staff are great but regional managers and head office are a nightmare to deal with
The good thingsthe staff within the store were extremelly helpful and friendly
The challengesRegional Management and head office had to high expectations and would constantly cut workload hours and expect you to do those workload hours during trade as well as every other task they want completed. The constant zoom meetings during trade and also the expectations of tasks that they would set out on the teams chat were unrealistic

    Average Pay. Terrible Management.
The good thingsYou got paid on time
The challengesAs a casual they book your roster out for the entire day then send you home after 4 hours. If you don't excel in every department they don't give you shifts in the areas you do excel at. I was a top "packer" but just slightly below the average for "picking". When I asked if there was anything I could do (tricks or any help) to improve my "picking" times the answer was no. Management very quick to judge you but don't want to help you to achieve their set targets.

Paid well, learnt a lot about larger team size management, but the expectations of the head office and regional staff make it hard to enjoy being a manager there.
The good thingsAbove award salary for Store Managers, obtainable bonus scheme.
The challengesAdhering to rostering allocations, company has unrealistic expectations but will limit your staffing resources to maintain bottom dollar.

One of the best places to work at, especially if you’re still at school or have just graduated!
The good thingsIt does really depend on the store you work at! But I loved working for city beach! You get an okay store discount and can use it for family and friends. Management team was amazing and always looking to help you improve. Great team.
The challengesBeing able to move up into a full time role is hard especially if you want to stay with the store you are at. If the store isn’t doing well sales wise then shifts do get cut. Can be hard to get extra shifts as the team is big!
