What’s it like working at Fire & Rescue NSW?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees at Fire & Rescue NSW appreciate the purpose of the organisation and the ability to help people in need and serve the community. They value the camaraderie and teamwork among colleagues, as well as the exciting and varied nature of the work, where they face new challenges regularly. The excellent training, opportunities for career growth, and access to fitness facilities are also highlighted as positive aspects.

However, there are some potential challenges, such as potential issues with management and a perceived lack of support or effective leadership from senior roles. Concerns about limited funding and aging equipment have been raised, which can impact the organisation's ability to operate effectively. While the roster system is generally seen as family-friendly, some employees have found it challenging to balance work and personal life, particularly in certain roles. Additionally, the nature of the work can expose employees to traumatic and distressing situations, which may require active strategies to manage mental health.

Overall good, but if you're not wearing a uniform.... you're a second class citizen
The good thingsYou can't beat the purpose of the organisation. There was pretty good flexibility and some great people to work with.
The challengesIt's a boys club with some intense ego's in high ranking positions. If you aren't wearing a uniform, you don't really matter. You had the standard Gov employees who've been with the organisation their whole careers which makes it difficult for progress. Headquarters in Greenacre - Why state gov? ;(

Great job, don't do it for the money.
The good thingsThe job itself is great with a lot great people at the station level. It's always an adventure, never know if it's going to slow day or going to get smashed with fire calls or what they will be. Get to help people in need.
The challengesNSW Government's long term lack of funding. Lots of old trucks and gear, wages have not moved much in more than 10 years. During COVID we got a 0.3% pay raise. Middle and senior management has too many clueless managers.

Good fun, good people who need to be paid a higher retainer based on their attendance at calls and drill and available hours.
The good thingsEvery time there was a call you never knew what you were heading into, made for an exciting workplace where no day/ call was generally the same. People were great and helped you learn IF you were open to asking questions and seeking assistance. Good 2 weeks of training at the start of employment, learned a great deal that I will take with me and ongoing drill training had benefits.
The challengesFor what we were paid as retained a LOT was expected. The hourly rate is fairly good for what we did, but the retainer was really poor, especially when most people met requirements and some hardly ever showed to drill, calls and did the absolute minimum availability hours and still got paid the exact same retainer???? Drill training was sometimes a waste of time, did not learn from every session but understand that they are necessary for team bonding and getting to know work mates who you sometimes only see at calls.
