What’s it like working at Indie Education?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees at Indie Education find working with students to be the most rewarding aspect of their roles, appreciating the opportunity to support young people's educational journeys through small class sizes. Salaries are notably higher than mainstream schools and industry standards, with additional benefits such as salary packaging. Many staff members describe their colleagues as passionate and supportive, particularly those working directly with learners.

However, there are some potential challenges to consider. The management structure involves multiple layers of oversight, and communication between departments could be more coordinated. Staff turnover is notably high, and some employees have observed that workplace culture can be challenging, with concerns about cliques and policy consistency. Workload expectations can be substantial, with high levels of documentation and assessment requirements. Working arrangements are primarily on-site with set hours, and staff have noted limited autonomy in decision-making, particularly for new employees.

The environment is very stressful, with management placing consistently unrealistic expectations.
The good thingsThere is nothing I can think of I enjoyed working there.
The challengesThe lead coach and area manager provide little to no training, mentoring, or meaningful support, as the management team is already operating under extreme stress and creates an environment that feels unwelcoming and highly pressured. Staff are micromanaged and expected to work under unreasonable conditions. Constant weekly changes to policies and procedures cause confusion and instability, and any attempt to raise concerns is dismissed with “it’s part of your job.” The overall culture is uncaring and toxic, with management focused solely on funding rather than fulfilling their duty of care to staff.

    Micromanaged, impossible to fulfil role
The good thingsThey have to pay higher than other places to keep anyone.
The challengesThe job description is not even close to what was actually asked of me. I spent an entire term preparing meals with very little classroom time. The principal constantly micromanaged every task and nothing was ever good enough. I was often shamed in front of other staff members and students for not doing the job to her standard (even when I did exactly as asked). Turns out I was doing the job that needed 3 people. This role is a chef, IT professional, psychologist, handyman, driver and a cleaner before it is a learning assistant. Not worth your time.
