What’s it like working at National Tertiary Education Union?

    AI summary of recent reviews

The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) is commended for its strong stance on gender equality, particularly in advancing women's rights in the university sector. Employees appreciate the reasonable leave conditions, including 36 weeks of paid parental leave, and the excellent sense of comradeship among colleagues, especially at branch offices.

However, some potential challenges have been noted, such as limited opportunities for career progression, with many Industrial Officers remaining in the same position for an extended period. There are also concerns about the management style, with some employees finding management unresponsive to their needs and lacking trust in staff. Additionally, employees have highlighted a lack of flexibility, with no options for remote work or adjusting start and finish times. Furthermore, there is a perceived overemphasis on meeting weekly targets rather than focusing on long-term strategies.

Great people and culture. A good place to build your advocacy skills. Lots of Fair Work Commission action.
The good thingsThis union is very strong on gender equality. They have 36 weeks paid parental leave for staff. I am impressed by what the NTEU has achieved in the advancement of women's rights in the university sector.
The challengesLimited career progression opportunities. Many employees have been an Industrial Officer for years and will likely remain in this position for life. The limited opportunities are because this union is quite small and niche in its specialty. A larger organisation would likely have more opportunities.

Not good. NTEU were a very good employer when I first began, they are now on par with practices displayed by University Human Resources Departments. No care and no concern. Would recommend working elsewhere.
The good thingsVery good when I first commenced. Leave conditions are reasonable. Excellent comradeship with other employees.
The challengesManagement not very responsive to the needs of employees. No ability to work from home or have any flexibility. Very old style management who are not progressive - only want staff in the office at the specified times stipulated in staff collective agreement. Cannot start early or finish late. Elected management do not trust staff and senior staff member only works to serve the elected management. Very limited ability to progress or move to higher paying positions.
