What’s it like working at Northern Health?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees at Northern Health value the supportive colleagues and strong teamwork environment, noting that staff work well together and support one another through challenges. The work/life balance is appreciated, with flexibility and monthly ADOs available. Staff find meaning in working with diverse patients and appreciate the opportunities to learn and develop their skills with support from peers and seniors. Additionally, salary packaging and salary grading are viewed positively.

However, there are some areas for improvement, including management support and communication, which can be inconsistent across different levels of the organisation. The organisation faces funding constraints and understaffing challenges, which can impact workload and the pace of achieving goals. Career pathways and permanent positions may be limited in certain roles, and facilities and equipment could benefit from modernisation. Work from home arrangements also vary across departments, with some areas offering less flexibility than others.

The experience of working with diverse people in the community has been very rewarding.
The good thingsI love the diverse and often vulnerable patients that I work with.
The challengesManagement is a dogs breakfast of incompetency, dishonesty, ignorance with backstabbing, no active listening, no innovation or problem solving capacity. Every where is under resourced, especially niche primary health care and preventive health community programs.

Terrible. Trying hard to find another role . No accountability of management propogating bad culture
The good thingsLocation is close to my place of residence
The challengesThere is active discouragement of work from home flexibility with HR policies allowing discretionary powers to managers who are taking full advantage of that and pressuring staff to be on site (non clinical) 5 days a week. Micromanaging and toxic work place with some management indulging in unbridled gossiping and pushing many staff to leave or keep changing departments. High turnover due to understaffing and irreasonable workloads

Work somewhere else. Not the best place to work unless you can afford to take unpaid personal leave
The good thingsThe small team I got to work with. Great support from Nurse Clinic leads
The challengesThere are several ongoing concerns within the team that are impacting staff wellbeing, morale, and retention. There is a noticeable pattern of micromanagement and favouritism from the Team Leader, which creates an inconsistent and unfair working environment. Expectations placed on staff are often high, yet there is little consideration for how these demands affect staff wellbeing. The lack of support from management has contributed to increased sick leave and multiple staff choosing to leave the department. This indicates deeper cultural and leadership issues that are not being addressed. Additionally, there have been instances where the Director calls meetings to reprimand staff for certain behaviours, yet then demonstrates the same behaviours themselves. This inconsistency sets a poor example and undermines trust in leadership. Overall, the management team often presents as immature and not aligned with the professional standards expected in a healthcare environment.
