    Just don’t do it unless you’re studying optometry.
    The good thingsNot much, interacting with some customers has been the best thing.
    The challengesWhere do I even start. Because it’s retail job people you work with is very important. Unfortunately, I work under a very rude, incompetent, passive aggressive, irresponsible manager who can’t even manage to make a phone call about the job that they have messed up, which makes my job even more miserable. Money first, customer second and have to sell extra stuffs other than what they actually need to customers. Staffs get competitive because you get feedback about your performance every month and they steal each others customers, which I found very toxic. No all-year-round staff discount, only during specific periods. You get some really rude, entitled customers - just because they have spent some good money on the glasses, they think they’re entitled to be rude. They’re so nice to the optometrists and as soon as they’re out of the consult room they switch their attitude entirely, which I found disgusting. There is no daily rota - meaning you never know when you’re getting your break. You are entitled for unpaid break but unless your manager initiates it, you never get them. Sometimes you get lunch at 3 if the store gets busy. No saturday loading, no after 6 loading; you get same amount of pay as a normal retailer whereas at OPSM you have to learn so much and has so much more responsibility. Honestly, if you’re not studying optometry, stay away from this job.
