My employment OPSM was that traumatic I needed my health care professionals involvement.
The good thingsAssisting customers as best I could despite the lack of in store training.
The challengesThe in store training was virtually non existent. For such an important thing as eye care you would expect a much higher standard of training for the role. The treatment I experienced in the four months I was employed at OPSM was dreadful.

A nightmare of an optical store, both as a customer, and as a former employee. WOULD AVOID!!
The good thingsThe co-workers were the best part; made my shifts actually bearable, and always offered help!
The challengesManagement refusing to accept responsibility for their own issues, blaming lower staff and upper staff, and lying about co-workers after they left.

Avoid the corporate pitfalls and poor management.
    The good thingsCustomer interactions
The challengesOptometry is not a healthcare role, it is strictly retail and money driven where people including staff and patients are not a priority. Next to no training is provided and dispensers often are uneducated about the importance of the prescription they are selling, it is a goal of selling an accessory with whatever upsell you can manage. I was studying optemetry and this role was instrumental in my decision to change degree.

Great at the start but heavy decline towards the end
The good thingsI enjoyed the staff I worked with over the years, this created a great positive environment and the job itself, helping patients with glasses was enjoyable and learning the optical industry. The first few years we’re the absolute best an it was a good company, I miss the old days where we came in and did a great job without all the extra pressure and stress in which this organisation has become.
The challengesI had been in the organisation for many years, things went downhill drastically after Covid, too much tracking of absolutely everything you can imagine!!! Too much pressure on everyone, monthly audits to having uncomfortable conversations with your staff as to why their KPI’s weren’t perfect every single time. Gone are the days of true and genuine customer service, as if you offer the patient the options and they decide to go for something less expensive you sit there and in the back of your mind you are stressed because at the end of the day you are worried you haven’t reported that you’ve done enough “Varilux XR Pro” or digital this and that extra 2nd pair for the fear of a put down at the next manager meeting is promising. Also to add to that, the pay for what we have to do is terrible and not reflecting of the workload. When a colleague of over 40 years retired and they did nothing for them when leaving no bye, no thanks, no gift.

    Looking to leave ASAP.
The good thingsMaking friends, caring for patients.
The challengesQuite literally everything. Everything is scrutinised, second guessed and you put up with daily toxic KPI burnout culture. Trust me, it's not worth it. The most toxic optometry company that exists in Australia.

Loyalty means nothing... Watch your back. Diversity over loyalty.
The good thingsWhile working with the company, I was able to build lasting relationships and build meaningful retail relationships with customers. We were given a considerate bonus to purchase our own glasses that renewed every year. We are given the opportunity to help in other stores. The stores I worked in, everyone was always helping each by trading staff, giving retail advice, helping them with general dispensing queries.
The challengesThe company does not value loyalty. As someone who has been in the company for over 2 years, I was overlooked by someone who had been with the company 8 days. This was not only a nasty surprise but set the precedence for my continued position to the company. 8 days over someone with over 2 years experience and had built lasting relationships with customers. My plan was to be here for another 2 years minimum, but not after I was made aware of that I am just a number, a small unmeaningful fish in a very vast ocean. KPI's are the biggest things. They are values over the mental states of employees. You can have your hours threatened if you are not meeting the standards. The company expects you to charge pensioners over $1,000 just to meet there targets. The company expects and expects, and pushes and pushes too hard. Micromanaging is a big part of RM daily activities, they have too much free time on their hands to be emailing every 5 seconds. And not everyone wants vision plan.

Stressful, only worth it for early career progression
The good thingsProduct Allowance was awesome, team members were great, I made many long lasting friendships. Career Progression.
The challengesI started off as a bottom of the rung dispenser and climbed to a multiple site manager, yet pay hardly went up (casuals were making more than me). Retail hours were constantly getting reduced even if you hit the targets. Upper management couldn't care less about you (RM's were forced to micromanage)

Wish I'd left long before I did.
The good thingsWorking with luxury brands, some of the colleagues you meet, lots to learn initially to keep you interested.
The challengesYou are just a number. I worked for the company for many years but expereince is not rewarded or appreciated. Wages are incredibly low for dispensers given the amount of skill and knowledge needed to perform the role properly, and the company are forever finding ways to undercut their staff -- from reducing loading on weekends, late nights etc, to expecting the same amount of work out of one staff member, which years ago would be performed by three or more people. The pressure is huge, you will be left alone in stores constantly even though you're being paid at a level that by their own EA agreements says you should be supervised, and they will find a way to make you leave once they are mandated to pay you more. Nepotism is also rife. Avoid this company, and certainly don't give them more than a year or two.

Just don’t do it unless you’re studying optometry.
The good thingsNot much, interacting with some customers has been the best thing.
The challengesWhere do I even start. Because it’s retail job people you work with is very important. Unfortunately, I work under a very rude, incompetent, passive aggressive, irresponsible manager who can’t even manage to make a phone call about the job that they have messed up, which makes my job even more miserable. Money first, customer second and have to sell extra stuffs other than what they actually need to customers. Staffs get competitive because you get feedback about your performance every month and they steal each others customers, which I found very toxic. No all-year-round staff discount, only during specific periods. You get some really rude, entitled customers - just because they have spent some good money on the glasses, they think they’re entitled to be rude. They’re so nice to the optometrists and as soon as they’re out of the consult room they switch their attitude entirely, which I found disgusting. There is no daily rota - meaning you never know when you’re getting your break. You are entitled for unpaid break but unless your manager initiates it, you never get them. Sometimes you get lunch at 3 if the store gets busy. No saturday loading, no after 6 loading; you get same amount of pay as a normal retailer whereas at OPSM you have to learn so much and has so much more responsibility. Honestly, if you’re not studying optometry, stay away from this job.

Used to be such a great place to work, with great staff and reasonable management. So focussed on how much money one can generate per hour that they’ve forgotten that patient care should be the main focus. Won’t get any better as surplus of Optometrists means they will continue to try and get rid of more experienced practitioners to bring in cheaper graduates.
The good things Helping people see, some great colleagues, staff allowance
The challengesThe constant focus on KPIs and pressure to sell. Extremely high staff turnover. Poor training of new staff members. Poor Dispenser to Optometrist ratio and therefore staff burn out. Micromanaging, questioning of professional advice. No admin time for Optometrists to do referrals or catch up. So much time theft, as these duties then fall out of hours.

Health industry and retail combined. Mentally stimulating role with good peer support. Growth opportunities available and regional managers listen and support our WA teams well.
The good thingsMental stimulation - always more to learn. Completing dispensing certificate as a trainee through OPSM along with learning through company-run courses including leadership development. Wonderful peers and team mates in home store and around the region. Everyone looks after each other and lends a hand or picks up the phone when needed. Great job to blend customer service and sales with the health industry. It feels good to help people feel good and look good in great quality specs that incorporate the latest technology in the way they are made.
The challengesSometimes we have to work on our own. Lots of admin tasks to keep on top of. Theft of sunnies can be frustrating. Retail hours have been reduced making it hard to always be responsive to customers and to help train and coach our team mates. Time management and task prioritisation are important.

    Should’ve gone to specsavers
The good things- Product allowance - There are some colleagues that are gems
The challenges- Top-down management expects an “above and beyond” attitude of employees leading to burnout, low morale, and employee dissatisfaction (i.e. “do more and be more” with inadequate resources, no compensation for higher/extended duties, NO genuine consideration for staff to have a healthy work/life balance) - limited to no consideration or initiatives conducive to retaining employees (particularly those with extensive knowledge/skills and demonstrated loyalty to the company) - lack of casual and full time jobs (unless you’re a manager), and most part time employees are on a guaranteed 7hr/wk contract limiting employees job security, capacity to earn a liveable wage on a regular basis, and ability to plan around life commitments - retail wage even though the level of optical knowledge and skills you need to perform the occupation outweigh those of a typical retail job - limited to no career progression opportunities - workplace lacks consideration of ergonomics and accessibility - since moving production of spectacles overseas the workmanship of the products has declined

One of my top 3 worst jobs
The good thingsThe only thing I enjoyed about working here was interacting with and helping the customers.
The challengesI’ve had A LOT of jobs across many industries and working at OPSM was one of my top 3 worst work experiences. The environment is cut throat and high pressure. The place is mostly full of aggressive Type A personalities. Despite the fact that I was very clear in my application that I didn’t have optical experience, I received little training and was instead thrown into the fire. After nearly four months of working there, I still hadn’t even been given my onboarding training. The Tweed City store has many employees who have been there a long time, most of whom have no tolerance or patience for a new employee who has been out of the work force for some years. OPSM says they have a “mentor program”, whereby they’re supposed to match you with someone who stays with you in training. Instead, I was shuffled amongst whoever was available on the day and all of these people had their own way of doing things, making it very confusing and I enjoyable. Overall, working at OPSM was a miserable experience and I’m eternally grateful to no longer be there.

Definitely a "passion for this" type of job
The good thingsSome customers really appreciate the service you provide to them and it makes a massive difference in their life. It definitely trains you and pushes your skills. The management training is amazing.
The challengesEverything is a KPI, hard to achieve bonus with high targets and some customers are completely unreasonable and rude. Feels like both customers and management are on your back regarding performance. Is very stressful and costly if mistakes are made. You always hear about bonus being the goal but due to high KPI targets, you never see it.

As with all corporates out there, staff are just a number.
The good thingsTeam on the ground is great
The challengesManagement has no regards to the effort staff put in, only cares about KPI/target. Payroll team inefficient and constantly have errors. Store manager and assistants, no empathy of how hard everyone is working. Probably they have no idea what proper patient care involves. Doesn't allow Admin time and kept pushing staff.
