Every member of the OPSM family cares deeply about eyes, our most precious natural assets. Our company creates career opportunities for those who love eyes too; and we work with communities, charities and sportspeople to improve vision while promoting the critical importance of good eye health. When the Optical Prescription Spectacle Makers store opened in Macquarie Street, Sydney in 1932, the vision was to help everyday lives by improving people’s sight. Managing your eye health is still our main focus, along with all the services we’ve developed over 80 years as OPSM.Source: this is an extract from the company’s own website

What’s it like working at OPSM?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees at OPSM appreciate the customer interaction and the rewarding experience of helping people with their eyewear needs. The supportive colleagues and team members create a positive work environment with lasting friendships. Staff value the product allowance for purchasing glasses annually, as well as the opportunities to learn about the optical industry through formal training and company courses. Working with luxury brands and quality products is also appreciated.

However, there are some potential challenges, including significant pressure to meet KPIs and sales targets with monthly tracking that can be difficult to achieve consistently. Many employees note that in-store training can be limited or inconsistent for new staff. Pay levels are mentioned as not reflecting the skill and workload required, with limited loadings for evenings and weekends. Upper management is described as primarily focused on financial targets, and some employees experience micromanagement. Retail hours have been reduced, making it challenging to provide adequate service whilst working evenings and weekends. Career progression opportunities can be limited, and the workload can be demanding with expectations to work alone and manage multiple tasks with reduced support.

My employment OPSM was that traumatic I needed my health care professionals involvement.
The good thingsAssisting customers as best I could despite the lack of in store training.
The challengesThe in store training was virtually non existent. For such an important thing as eye care you would expect a much higher standard of training for the role. The treatment I experienced in the four months I was employed at OPSM was dreadful.

A nightmare of an optical store, both as a customer, and as a former employee. WOULD AVOID!!
The good thingsThe co-workers were the best part; made my shifts actually bearable, and always offered help!
The challengesManagement refusing to accept responsibility for their own issues, blaming lower staff and upper staff, and lying about co-workers after they left.

Avoid the corporate pitfalls and poor management.
    The good thingsCustomer interactions
The challengesOptometry is not a healthcare role, it is strictly retail and money driven where people including staff and patients are not a priority. Next to no training is provided and dispensers often are uneducated about the importance of the prescription they are selling, it is a goal of selling an accessory with whatever upsell you can manage. I was studying optemetry and this role was instrumental in my decision to change degree.
