Why study this course

The Bachelor of Science (Nursing) is designed for those intending to practice as a registered nurse. This course provides a comprehensive program of study involving a diverse range of simulated practice and fieldwork, interprofessional learning, contemporary blended learning and advanced clinical skill development. During the course there is considerable emphasis on developing relevant clinical skills to meet the needs of changing healthcare. A large proportion of the course involves simulated learning and practical experience in a variety of hospital and community settings and includes the care of people of all ages across healthy to acutely unstable states. Simulated practice supports the development of competency prior to fieldwork placements in a safe learning environment. Clinical visits range from observation visits to more prolonged periods in selected health agencies where students are given increasing involvement and responsibility in nursing activities under the supervision of academic and industry staff. Students commence clinical experience in second semester, which may involve a rural placement and shift work, including night duty and weekend work. Employment is available in diverse healthcare settings including teaching hospitals; public and private hospitals; mental health facilities and allied health services (clinics, alcohol and drug centres); community health agencies; aged care; primary healthcare settings; medical practices with general and specialist practitioners; and defence services.

Challenging but worth it. I find it hard to meet my tutor only once a week or a month as I prefer it on a daily basis.

I wish I went to Notre Dame University to do my Nursing degree. It may have been full on in terms of clinical placements but at the end of the day, they give you full support and assistance when looking for a job. They teach you how to answer selection criteria and check your resume if you want to. In curtin, we were left alone by ourselves. Especially as international student, you don’t really get much support.

The course was as expected, heavy on book learning with less than desired clinical experinced offered by other universities. I liked the inclusion of volunteer hours completed within the course and the opportunity to complete these within the industry.
