The core units you complete will build the key skills needed to work with and care for animals. You'll learn to complete animal care hygiene routines, feed and water animals, assist in the health care of animals and work in the industry. You'll also develop your communication skills and learn to follow workplace health and safety processes. The electives you complete will depend on the institution you choose to study with.

Typically, there are no educational prerequisites for this course. Some institutions may set their own requirements for entry, which could include meeting set literacy and numeracy standards and/or having access to animals in order to complete assessment tasks.

This course prepares you for entry-level positions in the animal care industry, including in animal shelters, grooming services, pet shops, kennels and catteries. It's also a good starting point if you're looking to become a Veterinary Nurse. Completion of a Certificate II in Animal Studies is often a requirement for entry into a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing.

The final cost of this course will depend on a number of factors including your personal circumstances, previous experience and unit selections. As a general guide, if you are eligible for a subsidised place, it's likely to cost between $2,000 and $3,000. Most TAFEs do offer a concession rate, in which case, you could pay as little as $500.
