What's it like to be a Kitchen Assistant?
A Kitchen Assistant helps Cooks and Chefs with food preparation and storage, in addition to cleaning and restocking items. Kitchen Assistants may work in a variety of settings, such as commercial kitchens, residential facilities, childcare centres and aged care homes.
Tasks and duties
- Assisting kitchen staff with food preparation, being sure to follow infection control and safe food handling regulations and procedures.
- Ensuring the kitchen is clean and tidy.
- Washing, stacking and drying dishes and utensils, and ensuring bench tops are clean and sanitary.
- Operating kitchen equipment in-line with instructions.
- Ensuring food items or dishes and utensils are ready for use as required.
How to become a Kitchen Assistant
Formal qualifications are not required to work as a Kitchen Assistant, as training is usually provided on the job. However, vocational qualifications may be highly regarded by employers.
- 1.Consider completing a Certificate II in Kitchen Operations (SIT20416) in order to develop foundational skills and knowledge in safe food and kitchen practices.
- 2.Gain work experience in a kitchen assistant role, and ensure that you have any personal protective equipment required (such as closed-toed shoes).
- 3.There are many opportunities for Kitchen Assistants to gain new skills and move into other hospitality roles. You may wish to undertake further formal training, such as a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery (SIR30816).
