What's it like to be a Paraplanner?
A Paraplanner is a junior member of a financial planning team. They are responsible for collating documents from clients and completing the baseline, non-customer-facing work for a financial planning session.
Tasks and duties
- Preparing financial planning documentation, ready for endorsement by the senior team members.
- Entering client data into software, such as XPlan, COIN and Midwinter.
- Preparing and comparing different financial modelling for clients.
- Generating reports and presenting them.
- Maintaining client files.
- Making calls to clients to follow-up on information or requests, and preparing letters to be sent out.
- Assisting with investment and superannuation rollovers for SMSFs, retail and industry funds.
- Fact-finding and data checking.
- Managing Financial Adviser’s diary, scheduling client meetings.
- Training and staying up-to-date on industry changes.
How to become a Paraplanner
You usually need a relevant tertiary qualification to become a Paraplanner. If you’re planning on progressing towards a role as a Financial Adviser, complete an accredited bachelor degree.
- 1.Complete a relevant tertiary qualification. A Certificate IV in Financial Services (FNS41820) can introduce you to industry-relevant skills, while an Advanced Diploma of Paraplanning (FNS60920) is specifically designed for aspiring Paraplanners. If you’re considering moving into a Financial Adviser role in the future, complete an accredited bachelor degree such as a Bachelor of Business (Financial Planning).
- 2.Gain industry experience. Consider seeking an internship while studying, or start off in an entry-level role such as a junior paraplanner or assistant in a finance team.
