What's it like to be a Process Technician?
Process Technicians turn minerals and resources into their final forms before being turned into products. They use tools and equipment to crush, grind and screen raw materials such as iron ore. In some roles, you may focus more on maintaining the plant machinery and equipment used to process resources.
Tasks and duties
- Conducting site sampling and testing of samples.
- Complying with strict safety procedures and protocols.
- Performing daily inspections of plant equipment.
- Identifying and managing risks to people, the environment and equipment.
- Maintaining a tidy and safe workspace.
- Operating plant equipment including conveyors, crushers and screening equipment.
- Inspecting and maintaining complex machinery.
- Assembling and dismantling equipment and fittings.
- Overseeing shift handovers and contributing to safety meetings and production goals.
How to become a Process Technician
You don’t need any formal qualifications to work as a Process Technician, but a trade qualification in mineral processing, manufacturing or similar may give you an advantage. On-the-job training is provided. Medical checks and drug and alcohol screening are mandatory. A driver’s licence and tickets/licences to perform certain job activities may also be required.
- 1.Hold a current driver’s licence.
- 2.Complete medical and police checks, and regular drug and alcohol screening as required.
- 3.Gain experience in an entry-level operator role in mining, manufacturing or another primary production industry.
- 4.Complete a Certificate III in Resource Processing (RII30420). This is usually completed as a traineeship while working.
- 5.Gain licences to perform specific job activities, such as operating a forklift or crane, as required.
