What's it like to be a Technician?
A Technician is someone who installs, inspects, repairs or modifies complex systems or who undertakes diagnostic or mechanical tests. Types of Technicians include IT Technicians, Service Technicians, Automotive Technicians, Lab Technicians, Dental Technicians and Pharmacy Technicians.
Tasks and duties
- Maintaining and optimising the operation of particular systems or tests.
- Diagnosing defects and problems with systems and resolving these by applying technical knowledge and skills.
- Initiating precautionary measures and scheduling regular maintenance of systems in order to minimise disruptions to service.
How to become a Technician
Technicians are usually individuals who have trade qualifications and proven technical experience. Depending on the field in which you work, employers may also require you to have formal qualifications in the field.
- 1.Decide which industry you want to work in and investigate the qualifications requirements (such as a Diploma of Technical Engineering (MEM50212)).
- 2.Check to see whether you also need special licences, such as a forklift licence or White Card.
- 3.There are many different pathways available to Technicians who wish to further their career or specialise, such as further study or on-the-job opportunities.
