What's it like to be a Maintenance Fitter?
Maintenance Fitters craft, assemble and fit parts to heavy machinery and industrial equipment. They also install, maintain and repair a range of heavy machinery and industrial tools including their mechanical and hydraulic components.
Tasks and duties
- Interpreting drawings, diagrams and specifications and determining suitable materials and sequence of operations.
- Checking fabricated and assembled parts for fit and finish, tolerances and accuracy using precision measuring tools.
- Using machinery and tools to form raw materials into finished products by cutting, pressing, grinding, planing, boring and drilling.
- Performing routine maintenance of machines and tools, and diagnosing and repairing faults.
- Use oxy, electric, TIG and MIG welding techniques and machining processes to replace and repair parts.
- Preparing patterns for casting and cutting.
- Cutting, threading, bending and installing pipes and lines for hydraulic components.
- Following safety protocols.
How to become a Maintenance Fitter
A Certificate III in Engineering is usually required to attain a Maintenance Fitter role, either combined with, or in place of an apprenticeship.
- 1.Complete a Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade (MEM30205) as part of an apprenticeship, or at a TAFE or registered training organisation.
- 2.Gain practical experience as a qualified tradesperson and consider moving into specific industry such as mining, manufacturing, construction or transport.
