What's it like to be a Rope Access Technician?
Rope Access Technicians work on ropes, performing a range of tasks such as window and facade cleaning, painting, welding, pressure washing, repairing, inspecting and other maintenance activities. These tasks are generally performed high off the ground and are often difficult to access any other way. As a Rope Access Technician, you may work offshore on oil and gas rigs, or on buildings, towers, bridges and dams.
Tasks and duties
- Undertaking maintenance jobs such as painting, welding, repairing brickwork and pressure washing.
- Inspecting rigs and buildings for quality control and safety.
- Performing construction jobs such as rigging, pipe fitting and electrical work.
How to become a Rope Access Technician
To become a Rope Access Technician, you need to be at least 18 years of age, be in good physical health and unaffected by any disability or medical condition that prevents you from working safely. Training courses usually take a minimum of 30 hours over four days followed by a one-day assessment.
- 1.Complete a Rope Access Technician training course. During training you will be taught all Level 1 topics in preparation for your assessment.
- 2.Complete the assessment within 60 days of finishing your training. The assessment will be carried out by an Industrial Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA) assessor and is in two parts; written and practical.
- 3.Once you have passed the assessment you can practise at IRATA Level 1. You will then be issued a logbook to record working hours, as well as a certificate and card with the expiry date of three years from the date of assessment.
- 4.You can progress annually to Level 2 and 3 after completing 1000 working hours on-rope at each level.
- 5.IRATA Technicians are required to take re-validation training and assessment every three years to ensure they maintain safe working practices.
