What's it like to be a Builder?
Builders oversee, coordinate and work on the construction, repair and renovation of homes and other buildings. They may also manage entire projects. Builders must comply with strict safety regulations, including using and wearing protective equipment and ensuring the construction site is safe.
Tasks and duties
- Interpreting or organising plans that meet building code regulations and client specifications.
- Providing quotes for clients and submitting plans to local authorities.
- Organising contractors including carpenters, electricians and plumbers, as well as undertaking some building work personally.
How to become a Builder
To work as a Builder in Australia with the ability to sign off on work that has been done on site, you will need to hold a Builder’s licence or be registered. Requirements for licensing varies depending on your state or territory, but you will typically need to complete a vocational qualification and have on-the-job experience.
- 1.Complete a Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) (CPC40120) or Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) (CPC50220). Your choice of course may depend on the requirements in your state, your previous experience and the type of buildings you want to work on, such as low-rise or medium-rise.
- 2.Ensure you have a Construction Induction Card (White Card) which will enable you to work on a construction site. Some hirers may also prefer you to have a current driver’s licence.
- 3.After gaining experience in the construction industry, you can apply for a licence or registration. Check with the relevant licensing body in your state or territory for specific details on how many years of experience you need before you can apply.
