What's it like to be a DevOps Engineer?
A DevOps (development–operations) engineer facilitates collaboration between an IT organisation’s development and operations teams in order to achieve increased productivity. They oversee the efficient release and use of new software code and products. DevOps engineers have advanced problem–solving skills and enjoy collaborating with others. As they manage teams of developers, they need to have a strong knowledge of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), a six–stage process which guides software development projects. DevOps engineers work in IT companies and technology–driven organisations of all sizes.
Tasks and duties
- Designing tools and processes for managing infrastructure.
- Working on multiple platforms across different programming languages.
- Automating workloads across multiple cloud providers.
- Automating testing and deployment processes.
- Providing support to internal and external stakeholders on multiple platforms.
- Creating tools and processes designed to increase user satisfaction.
- Managing version control via Git and similar systems.
How to become a DevOps Engineer
To become a DevOps Engineer, you typically need a tertiary qualification in computer science or a related field, as well as industry experience.
- Complete a Bachelor of Computer Science or a related degree that focuses on software development.
- Consider enhancing your skills and knowledge with postgraduate study and/or industry certifications, such as a Graduate Certificate in Computer Science, Master of Engineering (Software) or PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (ACP).
- Build industry experience in roles that expose you to scripting and programming languages, cloud technologies and agile principles. Experience in a leadership role may be beneficial.
