What's it like to be a Payroll Officer?
Payroll Officers are responsible for processing payroll, tax calculations and deductions. They also prepare monthly, quarterly and year-end financial statements. The role may also include elements of accounts payable and light bookkeeping responsibilities.
Tasks and duties
- Assisting with month-end and payroll reporting.
- Being a key point of contact for all payroll queries.
- Calculating superannuation, PAYG and Payroll Tax calculations and payments.
- Updating and maintaining payroll records.
- Setting up payment accounts for employees.
How to become a Payroll Officer
While it’s possible to work as a Payroll Officer without a formal qualification, some employers may prefer candidates with a relevant vocational qualification.
- 1.Complete a relevant vocational qualification such as a Certificate III in Accounts Administration (FNS30317), Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping (FNS40217) or Diploma of Payroll Services (FNS50417).
- 2.Gain experience using payroll software such as MYOB or Xero.
- 3.Consider broadening your skills and career options with a higher qualification, such as a Bachelor of Accounting.
