What's it like to be a Product Manager?
A Product Manager is responsible for the guidance and development of a product, usually within an organisational setting. They are also responsible for leading the cross-functional team that is tasked with developing the product. Product Managers often take on the role of the 'voice of the customer' throughout the development cycle. They champion features and changes that research, strategic analysis and user testing show can meet customer needs.
Tasks and duties
- Researching customer needs.
- Talking to business stakeholders to understand key drivers for the product.
- Conducting competitor and market analysis.
- Articulating the vision of the product and creating a product roadmap.
- Managing a cross-functional team to ensure the product is customer-focused while meeting business needs.
- Making sure the product is being developed on time and to budget.
- Managing the product during its lifecycle, ensuring the product is performing at its peak capability through enhancements and fixes.
How to become a Product Manager
Formal qualifications are not essential to become a Product Manager but may be viewed favourably by employers.
- 1.A qualification in a related discipline may be an advantage, such as IT, computer science, marketing, or business.
- 2.Consider completing a Graduate Certificate in Product Management, or a product management short course or certification to build practical, relevant skills.
- 3.Find meetups, conferences and mixers to attend to network with people interested in meeting product management professionals, which may present you with opportunities for employment or professional development.
