What's it like to be a Sales Manager?
Sales Managers are responsible for the sales performance of a product or service, and the performance of the team tasked with selling.
Tasks and duties
- Creating and maintaining client relationships.
- Business development, pushing into new industries and territories.
- Training sales staff to sell at peak performance.
- Giving sales presentations, attending trade shows and giving product demonstrations.
- Providing an escalated level of customer service for more complex queries or assuaging disgruntled customers.
- Implementing in-store campaigns, promotional strategies and product displays.
- Ensuring sales targets are being met.
- Ensuring prices, warranties and customer documentation are accurate.
- Maintaining a Customer Relationship Management database.
How to become a Sales Manager
Formal qualifications are not required to work as a Sales Manager but may be advantageous when seeking employment.
- 1.Start out in a Sales Consultant role and work your way up to Sales Manager, taking on more and more responsibility until you are head of the team.
- 2.You may need qualifications if you plan to work in a specialised industry, such as the fast food industry. There are Certificate III and IVs available in these specialised industries through a TAFE or a Registered Training Organisation.
- 3.Considering completing a Bachelor degree at university. These courses generally take 3 years full-time. You’ll need to have completed year 12 or gain admission through an alternative pathway.
