Disappointing. Could be great, but not with current leadership failing to evolve.
The good thingsMany people were genuinely passionate about the arts.
The challengesPoor culture and communication. People who should've moved on still hanging on with no passion, competence, or capacity to perform. More goes into making excuses than just doing the job. Drains the life out of you

Great opportunity to develop engineering skills while contributing to community infrastructure
The good thingsWorking at Cairns Regional Council has been a positive professional experience. The organisation provides opportunities to work on a wide range of infrastructure and development projects that directly contribute to the community. In my role reviewing stormwater drainage and flood assessments for development applications, I have gained valuable experience applying engineering standards such as FNQROC Development Manual and QUDM. The workplace encourages collaboration between engineers, planners and other technical teams, which helps deliver better outcomes for development and infrastructure projects. The work environment is supportive and offers good work-life balance, including flexible and hybrid working arrangements. It is also a good place to build experience in local government engineering, particularly in stormwater management, development assessment, and infrastructure planning.
The challengesLike many local government organisations, processes can sometimes take longer due to approvals, policies, and coordination between multiple departments. Workloads can also fluctuate depending on the volume of development applications being assessed. However, these challenges are part of working in a regulatory environment and provide valuable experience in understanding planning frameworks, engineering standards, and stakeholder coordination.

    Disappointing and strange
The good thingsWhen I was left alone in the building post-interview without any sort of visitor pass, lol
The challengesDuring the interview process I was sent a spreadsheet to complete; the file already contained another candidate's personal data. It asked unlawful questions about age, race etc. Interviewers weren't very friendly and I don't think they mentioned anything about the team or who I'd be reporting to
