Great company & good buying prowess. Toxic people, and toxic phony environment.
The good thingsGood company run by bad people.
The challengesThe workplace environment is characterized by intense pressure, unfulfilled expectations, and limited opportunities for professional development. Promotions are often conducted discreetly, with favored individuals being publicly lauded as high-performers before their advancement. The organization is swift to remove employees who do not meet established standards. It appears that promotion and annual review interviews are primarily ceremonial.

Mixed experience — grateful for the opportunity but disappointed in the culture
The good thingsDecent pay, job stability, enjoyable work, and friendly colleagues. Many of my coworkers were supportive and kind, and several expressed sadness when I left, which meant a lot.
The challengesThe overall work environment often felt toxic and unsupportive. I gave my full effort, rearranged university classes, travelled long distances, and stayed back for extra shifts when needed. Despite that dedication, I sometimes felt undervalued and treated differently from others. Training was poor, and when I tried to learn things independently, I was criticised instead of encouraged. I’ll admit I wasn’t always the fastest, but many others also struggled — and not everyone was treated equally. I do want to show respect to my department manager. Despite sometimes taking sides, he was the one who gave me the opportunity in the first place, even over more experienced applicants, and he genuinely tried to help me pass my probation. For that, I’m sincerely grateful. Unfortunately, my final weeks were very hurtful. I became unwell during my notice period and was met with an extremely unprofessional reaction that left me disappointed after all the effort I had given.

I’ve gained hands-on experience in fast-paced customer service at Costco’s food court, handling cash transactions, preparing food, and working efficiently as part of a team
The good thingsCostco provides a great environment to learn and improve new skills. It’s a stable company with steady growth, which means employees have reliable hours and long-term opportunities
The challengesCostco provides limited scheduling flexibility, which means shifts can change every day or every week. Moreover, the job demands a lot of heavy lifting and long hours on the feet.

Enjoyable and easy job, stressful at times, work life balance needs improvement.
The good thingsHigh pay for retail industry, good direct management (supervisors are most laissez-faire in management style), good benefits (optical, paid steel capped shoes, above award super and payrates).
The challengesUpper management can annoy you when you're just doing your job. A lowly cashier / Front end assistant does not need to be heckled to increase KPI's that only upper management can actually change with proper management. Front end KPI's can be stressful when they're almost solely reliant on your customer spending more money, which for a budget orientated retail store is nonsensical. When people are coming in to save money on groceries I'm trying to market or up sell memberships that almost certainly wont benefit that customer. Point of service systems are also quite out of date, with most customer inquiries that I could answer straight away, would need to be redirected to the member service counter. Rosters are rotating, almost always going to be working 8 hours on a weekend day, good penalties, but eventually you wanna spend time with friends or family who only have weekends available.

effective customer service with a focus on problem-solving and customer satisfaction.
The good thingsOne of the things I enjoy most about customer service is the opportunity to make a positive impact on someone's day. Whether it's solving a problem, answering a question, or simply listening with empathy, it's rewarding to help customers feel heard and supported. I also appreciate the fast-paced, dynamic environment—no two days are the same, and each interaction brings a new challenge to solve. Most of all, I value the chance to build trust and connection with people from all walks of life, often turning a difficult situation into a great experience.
The challengesDealing with upset customers can be tough, especially when the issue is out of my hands. It can also be repetitive at times—but I focus on staying calm and professional.

    not employee friendly
The good thingsthe pay, many different things to do and learn if the supervisor doesn't constantly put you on one job only
The challengespoor management, rude customers, yelling, anxiety inducing, depression causing, constant contradictions, favoritism, inability to request and choose shift hours as that is 'not how costco works'

Terrible from start to finish. I wanted to quit within the first 2 months but a coworker begged me to stay. I would not recommend working for Costco unless you are desperate.
The good thingsNot a lot. They offer a lot of extras like optical cover and premium membership, but you have to jump through hoops to get it.
The challengesPoorly managed, managers do whatever they want without repercussions for their behaviour. When you complain to upper management they try to blame it on the employee. In the time I was working there I saw Safework SA come out at least 2 times. Machinery isn't even bolted to the ground.

Personally, hours were not suitable enough for my lifestyle due to commitments mainly. Pay was fantastic however. Co workers were great. Management at my store could be a bit more constructive.
The good thingsWorking with a great bunch of people around the store. Lot's of the people who were working there were amazing to talk to. Pay was great for a place like Costco also.
The challengesManagement could at least have more of a positive attitude towards you personally when it comes to feedback for example. Also, when it comes to people doing things their "Own Way" I strongly suggest you take it up with management if you are not sure.

The good thingsGoing home. Used to be good penalties but they started making everyone start later in the morning to avoid paying so much.
The challengesWork life balance doesn’t exist and then they take money out of your pocket but expect the same amount of work to be achieved.

    Fun, Friendly and Great opportunities.
The good thingsGood environment, pay and working culture. A lot of opportunities for career growth. Diverse team at most stores. Work in general was enjoyable, time passes quickly.
The challengesRoster/days off arent fixed, but maybe thats a good thing for some people. Too many inspections which results in a lot of overtime. But to be fair i worked in the central/capital branch, i assume other branches get less inspections.

Great perks and pay, job itself can be quite repetitive.
The good thingsCostco takes good care of their staff in terms of perks, workplace safety and they gave me a bonus for working through covid. There's a lot of different departments which you can move to if one doesn't work out, and the pay is above average.
The challengesI worked in member service which was stressful and i got payed to stand at the door for 8hrs which became very mind numbing, rude customers every now and then but that's retail. Bakery had good management but again, the job itself can get very repetitive and the early hour starts ultimately made me quit
