Site requires major changes about the attitute towards working.Hard to convince for a solid solution
The good thingsWell establish deadlines for the reportings and other finance protocols.
The challengesLess integrity from the top management about the decision making. When finance inquired about some of the outcomes from the clinical operations and it was backfired and inappropriate words have been used to counter the questions.

Love Mater, disappointing to see a decline in IT projects - inexperience and poorly supported.
The good thingsGenuinely a rewarding place to work on the most part. Serving the community brings reward and joy every day.
The challengesIt can be surreal at times. Over the years, I have witnessed a variety of technological changes. The past 12 to 18 months have been detrimental to the project profession, marked by fragmentation, with business units running their own independent projects on key systems. Clearly, IT projects have lost their direction and need guidance. I have been involved in both proof-of-concept and implementation work. Unfortunately, proofs of concept often lack structure and fail to evaluate the end goals. They tend to be led by well-meaning but inexperienced individuals. As a result, the referrals deteriorated quickly and were characterised by a lack of proper planning, engagement, collaboration, and project leadership. This is not a situation deserving of our organisation; we can and do attract talented people.

A poorly led program with no clear direction, limited capability, and little support for staff.
The good thingsMater’s mission and clinical teams deserve strong digital support, and the new CEO seems to say the right things. There are capable people within the organisation who could deliver more if empowered.
The challengesThe Digital Health Systems Program continues to face significant challenges, including weak leadership, a lack of a clear plan, and insufficient mentoring. Project managers are left without support or guidance. Leadership seems overwhelmed and lacks the experience needed for such a complex program. As a result, the program appears directionless and disconnected from modern digital health practices. The operating environment feels unprofessional, with critical decisions often made without the necessary expertise. This situation fosters a culture where staff feel unsupported and unclear about expectations, leading to underutilization of skilled individuals and inconsistent leadership. In a fully utilised environment, while inexperienced leadership contributes to a climate of inconsistency and confusion. The ongoing list of failed or failing projects needs to stop.

Great organisation with very poor leadership
The good thingsDespite all the challenges I am hopeful that Mater can get back to its core mission which is why I would recommend it as a place to work. The values of the organisation, the hard working Sisters who started Mater, the staff who genuinely want to see Mater thrive, the location of the offices and hospitals. All the essential services staff who do impactful work for the community
The challengesBAU staff numbers being cut resulting in hard working commitmented employees with years of knowledge who are values driven, being burnt out and leaving resulting in a knowledge drain and processes falling over while senior management are focused on smoke a mirrors, politics/'cat fights' and managing perceptions vs delivering reality and fixing processes. Replacing BAU with layers and layers of projects and analysts, with minimal experience impacting big decisions. Complete disconnect between layers of management, miscommunication and understanding of core functions. Annual employee surveys with big insights getting ignored. Possibly the biggest improvement is to crack down on, recruitment- especially on senior levels ensuring alignment with values and accountability to avoid the ongoing political circus before the house of cards comes tumbling down.

Do yourself a favour: Just don't work here.
The good thingsAbsolutely nothing. Leaving was the best thing.
The challengesNo formal onboarding or training. System access came gradually over weeks; tasks were assigned without being shown how. Role was described as "newly created" during hiring but turned out to be the same as the original position. No position description was ever provided. Received direction from multiple managers who didn't communicate with each other about priorities. When raised, was told they "don't really talk." Work from home refused, while other team members WFH regularly. Data systems disorganised—missing documents, inconsistent date formats, no clear processes. When raised, was told I was "not here to process change." Public confrontation in the office: manager raised voice, threatened HR involvement in front of others. No support or resolution offered for any issues raised. Poor communication and lack of structure made it impossible to perform effectively. Set up to fail, not to succeed. No investment in employee success from day one. Toxic culture.

An example of how not to run IT. Simply falling apart day by day.
The good thingsThe job market is picking up. Working in poor office conditions and uncomfortable environments is a real winning combination. Topped only by the missing-in-action management.
The challengesMater IT support is consistently disappointing. Engagement is poor, issues rarely reach proper resolution, and many requests are simply ignored or dismissed. Constant outages make day‑to‑day work frustrating, and the support culture feels reactive rather than accountable. Mater deserves a far more reliable and customer‑focused IT function than what is currently delivered. Answers to operations seem to be Google-driven rather than any real practical experience. Nice enough people, however, they simply lack the breadth and depth of knowledge to make more purposeful operations.

A deeply disappointing experience with a program that should be the backbone of safe, modern care.
The good thingsMater’s mission and clinical teams deserve strong digital support. There are capable SMEs and engineers within the organisation, when they are allowed to contribute.
The challengesThe Clinical Applications Program is disorganised and lacks effective leadership and structure. Delivery relies on a few "project heroes" instead of proper planning and governance. Skilled engineers and subject-matter experts are excluded from decision-making, compromising safety and sustainability. The program feels chaotic and personality-driven, with reactive leadership that lacks coherent planning and constantly shifting priorities. Visibility is prioritised over competence, sidelining those who advocate structured practices while celebrating ad hoc efforts. Mater deserves a clinical applications program that aligns with its values of care, safety, and professionalism. This necessitates a reset in leadership, governance, and culture toward inclusive and expert-led practices. Without this change, the program will continue to fall short of the needs of clinicians and patients.

Was just unlucky to worked at Mater and so glad I'm out
The good thingsI have enjoyed in providing high quality of service to all patients and their families as much as possible. I have met new people who became my coworkers and who have contributed to my success in becoming a much better person.
The challenges1. Senior management is so awful. So toxic and full of micromanaging. Needs to stop because good employees walk out. 2. Better hire someone who has no or less skills and with good people skills/ethic. Skills could be learned rather than hiring someone or letting stay in the workplace who is a terrible manager in all sorts of aspects. 3. Let all managers/TL/higher management, etc have a regular module to study on how to treat people nicely. 4. More connection is needed to the staff. Create a good relationship. 4. Please be NICE. It won't hurt

The good thingsTeam on the ground is lovely but management lacks appreciation of staff and is out of touch. Appears upper management does not value their nurses.
The challengesNeeds to go digital, improve nursing resources and show appreciation to their staff that provide the patient care. Don't seem to recognise staff for their contributions.

A rapid and sad decline that current leadership has no chance of reversing.
The good thingsThe team and my direct manager were generally pretty good.
The challengesLack of resources and money to maintain critical infrastructure. We were expected to pull long hours to make up for the underinvestment. This has only gotten worse with announcements of new major projects, with no resources, no one listening, and no one with the ability included in the planning. Leadership failed us, resulting in the departure of key people and exposing weaknesses in upper IT management. We are pretty much left to our own devices now. Promised positive change and opportunities, but no one believes it. Sad state of affairs.

A disappointing and uninspired digital experience. Not reflective of our standards.
The good thingsMater’s mission and clinical teams are strong and inspirational. There is genuine potential if the digital leadership and capability are uplifted correctly.
The challengesThe Mater digital experience and Copilot rollout are disappointing. The program feels shallow, adds little beyond standard Microsoft material, and lacks genuine expertise. Leadership comes across as well‑meaning but out of depth, with engagement that can feel condescending rather than enabling. Content is dull and unimaginative, offering no real uplift for staff or the organisation. From a content and user‑experience perspective, the offering is dull and unimaginative, adding no meaningful value. There is no sense of innovation, no practical enablement, and no evidence of understanding how AI should be embedded into a complex health environment.

Service Quality and Culture need Improvement
The good thingsLove my job and working in healthcare; my colleagues are genuine and caring people. Being Catholic and serving at a Catholic Hospital is rewarding. Mater as an organisation has a strong mission and many dedicated clinical and operational teams.
The challengesThe IT function frequently underperforms in projects, system upgrades, and service support. Staff interactions can be dismissive and rude, creating a negative experience for internal customers who rely on these systems for safe patient care. Management seems to model these behaviours by showing a lack of inclusivity and professionalism, thereby normalising low standards. Moreover, system upgrades and health technology projects suffer from poor governance and inconsistent execution, with recurring issues and unclear communication. Support interactions often feel adversarial rather than collaborative, with requests met with resistance and inconsistent follow-through. The culture lacks a focus on customer service and respect for those who depend on IT to perform their jobs.

Questionable leadership, desperate planning and actions driven by selfish reasons
The good thingsLocation is good for transport.
The challengesHas to be the most poorly directed IT department I have experienced. The last year has seen the decline accelerate. The workplace has become unsafe to the point we avoid certain people so we don’t wrongly end up in HR. There is a now a clueless scramble to fix old applications, but again more hot air, more pointless statistics and metrics, no vision just put more lipstick on the problems. With one gone we can but hope the other four go to.

A prime example of how incompetence takes over and becomes self-rewarding, and competence sidelined.
The good thingsThe work can have a meaningful impact, particularly when systems function well and directly support patient care and frontline operations.
The challengesThe IT and digital delivery functions suffer from widespread incompetence, especially among senior leaders, creating a culture of tolerating underperformance. This results in poor quality, low morale, and increased risks. Senior managers lack governance and people-management expertise, leading to weak decision-making and unclear strategic direction. Frequent system outages result from preventable errors and reactive fixes. Project management is basic, with inconsistent practices. Underperformance is normalised, and skilled employees are unsupported, leading to decreased trust and fear of raising concerns. The environment doesn't meet safety-critical standards, requiring urgent leadership and governance improvements to prevent ongoing failures and cultural decline. It is not more investment that is needed, it's a better use of that investment. Good people are leaving.

A genuinely rewarding place to work
The good thingsWorking in the Mater Hospital pharmacy has been one of the most positive and fulfilling experiences of my career. The location is excellent and makes coming to work each day easy, but it’s the people and the purpose that truly make the difference. I feel genuinely privileged to be part of Mater. The culture is warm, supportive, and mission‑driven, and you can see the organisation’s values reflected in everyday interactions—across clinical teams, leadership, and the wider workforce. There’s a strong sense of teamwork and respect, and you always feel that what you do matters. The recent launch of Mater’s new vision for the future has been incredibly inspiring. It’s energising to be part of an organisation that is not only committed to exceptional patient care today but is also investing in innovation, growth, and long‑term impact. It gives you real confidence in the direction we’re heading and makes you proud to contribute to that journey.
The challengesNormal challenges with a large organisation, mostly around systems and investment. Everyone works together to deliver excellence in care, which makes a big difference

Supportive workplace overall, with some cultural areas that would benefit from improvement.
The good thingsMater is generally a positive place to work. The mission is meaningful, most teams are supportive, and many colleagues are genuinely committed to delivering good outcomes. This creates a strong sense of purpose and a collaborative environment across much of the organisation.
The challengesWithin IT, there are some cultural and leadership challenges that can affect the employee experience. In certain areas, communication and people‑leadership practices are inconsistent, which can impact team morale. Staff have also experienced situations where workplace interactions feel dismissive or unprofessional, and it is not always clear how concerns are addressed or followed up. This can leave some employees unsure how to navigate these situations. Mater has many strengths, and the majority of people are respectful, dedicated, and aligned with the organisation’s values. Continued focus on leadership capability, behavioural expectations, and transparent processes for raising and resolving concerns would further strengthen the workplace culture. The perception that some are protected or shielded does not foster a healthy workplace.

Meaningful work, great colleagues, but the health applications are understaffed and poorly led.
The good thingsWorking in the health applications space at Mater is rewarding in many ways. The work has purpose, the teams are dedicated, and the organisation’s mission genuinely matters. The people on the ground care deeply about delivering safe, reliable digital systems for clinicians and patients.
The challengesThe health applications area is severely understaffed, resulting in stretched teams that are reactive and constantly dealing with crises. Instead of focusing on building stability, we often find ourselves recovering from preventable issues due to inadequate planning and leadership. The leadership in digital systems is a key part of the problem. The director’s lack of proactive oversight leads to late, reactive decisions that create unnecessary churn and diminish team confidence. Delivering high-quality outcomes is challenging when leadership appears disengaged and inconsistent. Mater has great potential, and the dedicated staff are committed to achieving it. However, without stronger leadership, sufficient staffing, and a shift to strategic management, the health applications area will continue to face struggles.

    Feb 2026

Teams abandoned, consultants in charge, and reality completely ignored
The good thingsYou’ll gain deep exposure to slide decks, frameworks, maturity models, and “future state” diagrams. If your career goal is to become fluent in corporate theatre and narrative management, this is basically an immersive language course.
The challengesWorking in Finance here feels like running critical operations with no real managers, while external consultants dictate direction. Teams lack stable leadership yet are expected to deliver complex outcomes in constantly shifting conditions. The reliance on consultants is unhealthy. Many are obsessed with controlling the narrative, even when they don’t understand it. Optics and slide decks matter more than substance or delivery, and strategies are endlessly rebranded to suit executive storytelling rather than solve real problems. Internal subject matter experts are sidelined or ignored, as if relying on them threatens consultant authority. The result is predictable: impractical designs, rework, and decisions divorced from operational reality. Teams are left to pick up the pieces with no accountability above them. Burnout is common, and failures are framed as “delivery issues” at the team level. If you value real expertise, stable leadership and outcomes over optics, avoid this place.

A cultural shift has taken hold in IT, making it an uncomfortable place to work for most
The good thingsSome create colleagues, an interesting field and a handy location. So mismanaged, you can be as relaxed and unproductive as you like, or so some demonstrate.
The challengesI work in IT at Mater Group, and unfortunately, the workplace culture has taken a significant downturn. Recent team layoffs — which now appear unjustified — have created an environment of fear and discomfort. What has been most disheartening is seeing that the individuals who drove these decisions face no accountability and, if anything, seem emboldened by the outcome. This behaviour goes against the values Mater promotes. Instead of fostering collaboration, respect, and integrity, the organisation is now rewarding extreme intimidation and poor conduct, even when it harms people and undermines results. Those responsible continue to push ahead in areas they have little understanding of, creating instability and frustration across the team. It has become a very uncomfortable place to work, especially in IT. I had hoped for a workplace that lived up to its stated values, but the current culture makes it difficult to feel safe, supported, or respected.

Projects and IT support for clinical systems have become a runaway train; someone needs to stop it.
The good thingsEnjoy my daily role and the team. Love the location and the surroundings. It gives me great pride to be able to servethe community and our front line workers.
The challengesIn the last 1-2 years, there has been a rapid decline in support for health systems and project delivery. Immediate intervention is necessary to prevent real harm. Critical system changes are being implemented without clear requirements, and there has been poor consultation, inadequate planning, and poor execution. I have attended workshops where key stakeholders were absent, and some were even unaware of the changes being implemented. IT governance seems to be misguided, driven by inappropriate motives, and is steering projects in the wrong direction while failing to control scope drift.

Great people and meaningful work, but digital support needs improvement.
The good thingsI enjoy the work I do at Mater and genuinely value the colleagues I collaborate with. The culture is positive, and the role itself is rewarding.
The challengesThe main challenge is the lack of effective support for SharePoint and core content platforms. IT assistance is slow and often not equipped to resolve even basic issues. The M365 team is well‑meaning but lacks the depth of expertise needed to manage enterprise content systems, resulting in delays, workarounds, and unnecessary friction. Tasks that should be automated or self‑service often become lengthy processes. A little less of the condescending demeanour would go a long way, as would listening to understand. Mater has strong people and purpose, but improving digital capability—especially in SharePoint and content management—would significantly improve staff productivity and the overall experience.

The good thingsHealthcare presents challenges unique to healthcare. Mater adds its own challenges, making it brilliant. Mater provides a safe home for incompetence, which, mixed with sheer luck, is a joy to study.
The challengesMater would do well to stop its major projects in Finance and Supply Chain and review the department's leadership, as well as the Finance lead projects. Finance is not alone, and IT needs a good shakeup, again led by nice enough people, just not the right people in the top roles.

    Well‑intentioned digital change, weak execution
The good thingsMater has a strong intent around digital uplift and invests heavily in modern platforms like Microsoft 365. Many staff are committed to improving how technology supports healthcare delivery.
The challengesUnfortunately, recent M365 user experience training was exhausting and poorly aligned to the realities of healthcare delivery. Sessions focused more on presentation than practical, role‑based value, with a limited understanding of time‑poor clinical and operational environments. Much of the content could have been delivered more effectively through concise guidance or existing Microsoft resources. The lack of user‑centred design and strong leadership oversight made the experience feel like a poor use of staff time. Digital transformation succeeds when it respects frontline realities. Greater focus on outcomes, relevance, and genuine user needs would significantly improve adoption and trust.

Finance continues to decline, lacks authentic leadership and blocks business progress.
The good thingsThere are committed people across the organisation who genuinely want to deliver good work. The frontline teams are collaborative, and the broader workforce is supportive despite ongoing pressures.
The challengesLeadership culture within the Finance function is a significant challenge. Decision‑making is frequently blocked, and communication is tightly controlled, creating an environment where staff feel disempowered. The heavy reliance on external consultants has not delivered meaningful value; the approach is highly theoretical, overly reliant on management jargon, and lacks a practical understanding of capability and talent. Major Finance system upgrades continue to struggle, with substantial spending producing limited progress and little clarity on long‑term outcomes.

Strong Mission and People, but Poor Project Management creates risk
The good thingsMater has many admirable qualities. The mission-driven culture is evident, and the commitment to patient care shines through. I've worked with passionate, knowledgeable staff dedicated to making a difference. The strong collaborative spirit and sense of purpose make the work meaningful.
The challengesAs a healthcare specialist involved in several major implementations, I have consistently encountered rushed project deliveries and a lack of foundational project management practices. Key planning steps are often skipped, timelines are compressed without adequate justification, and critical risks are not properly assessed or mitigated. This pattern creates unnecessary pressure on staff and exposes the organization to avoidable operational and clinical risks.
