What’s it like working at Oxford University Press?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees at Oxford University Press consistently praise the supportive, friendly, and talented colleagues who create an inclusive and welcoming culture. The flexible working arrangements, including hybrid working and rostered time off, contribute to a positive work/life balance. Management is generally supportive and approachable, with particular recognition for transparent communication during challenging times. Staff appreciate the opportunities for learning and development, as well as working for an organisation with a meaningful educational mission and strong ethical values.

However, there are some potential challenges to consider. Tight deadlines and publishing cycles can create pressure in certain roles, with expectations of longer hours at times. Some employees note that processes and structures could be more clearly defined, and working with the UK head office can involve some bureaucracy. A few staff members have mentioned that salaries may not be as competitive in certain divisions, and there has been higher staff turnover noted in some departments, particularly marketing. Additionally, experiences with leadership transparency and support can vary across different teams.

    You should really think twice
The good thingsWork is versatile offering a variety of different tasks and opportunities to build new skills. Job can be rewarding when there is enough time to produce quality work. There are some really fantastic, friendly and bright people on the ground, the office facilities are nice and it's close to public transport.
The challengesLow pay, large pay discrepancies between people in same roles, high volume of work (expect to give up nights/weekends as some deadlines require it), lots of burnout. Large drop in the quality of products due to increasing business pressure each year to get to market earlier without supporting the team to feasibly do the job to a high standard. Some senior management are largely disconnected from teams they lead which creates a culture of many individuals feeling unsupported. Staff feedback responded to with band-aid solutions, buzzwords or nothing tangible. Many people here would prefer to work somewhere else and can't imagine staying in the job for too much longer explaining the high turnover. I also experienced some strange, inequitable treatment during my time in this role but honestly it isn't that surprising after reading reviews about senior management on other sites. Don't be surprised if a high star review comes in after this, that's the type of place this is...

This hasn’t been my experience. OUP is supportive, with great people and leadership.
The good thingsI really enjoy being part of the team. There’s a lot of knowledge, commitment, and also a good sense of fun, which makes it a great place to work. I have learned a lot since joining and have been supported to move into a different team.
The challengesEveryone works hard and cares about what they do, but it can be stressful at times when deadlines are tight, but everyone pulls together and helps each other out. It’s nice to be part of a team that’s committed and knows the work we’re doing makes a difference.

Neglectful senior management take much of the joy of working here away.
The good thingsOther staff can be quite pleasant. Hybrid working conditions and the office location are beneficial.
The challengesThere is no organisation. There is no thought given to the wellbeing of employees. Salaries are poor and a number of staff are in financial strain. People in high-up positions are quite disconnected from the rest of the workforce. When issues are brought up, they are taken personally and never resolved or taken seriously, often leaving the person feeling ostracised. Our output as a company is actively decreasing in quality due to pressures from senior management. We are not non-for-profit - money is all these people talk about. No one cares about education or educators.
