What’s it like working at Social Futures Ltd?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees consistently praise Social Futures as a highly inclusive workplace that values diversity and creates a supportive, respectful environment. The work/life balance is excellent with true flexibility, and staff appreciate the extensive training opportunities and strong encouragement for career development. Management is generally described as approachable, responsive and supportive, prioritising staff wellbeing and self-care. Employees value the meaningful work in social justice and community service, and appreciate their hardworking, compassionate colleagues. The generous NFP salary packaging and other benefits are also well-regarded.

However, there are some potential challenges to consider. Social Futures is a large and complex organisation with almost 400 employees and 27-plus programs across NSW and Queensland, which requires time to understand and navigate. The organisation is continuously growing and expanding, leading to ongoing change that can be challenging at times. Some employees note that the workload can be busy, though wellbeing is prioritised and flexibility is provided. There are also external factors such as NDIS changes and government funding limitations that impact the work environment.

    Good intentions, inconsistent execution
The good thingsThe people - they are well-intentioned, friendly, and genuinely care about the work they do. The organisation has proactively taken action in response to the housing crisis in the Northern Rivers region, addressing critical gaps.
The challengesIn my experience, the organisation was hierarchical and siloed - decision-making happened above and around, not with workers. Organisational shifts from above impacted program resourcing and role clarity, without explanation or consultation. Some operational structures, such as workplace safety, were present, but not well-practised. Flexibility is promoted, but is not available equally across all roles.

CYF branch had a toxic culture, ignoring staff concerns and lacking accountable leadership.
The good thingsThe people on the ground are great hard working and compassionate people
The challengesDuring my time in the CYF branch, the workplace culture felt unsupportive, with little emphasis on psychological safety. Management appeared heavily performance-driven, adopting a “shape up or ship out” approach that discouraged open dialogue and development. Staff complaints were not consistently or transparently investigated, undermining trust in leadership and internal processes. There was a clear perception that senior leaders supported one another rather than meaningfully engaging with frontline feedback, further reducing confidence and morale. Significant improvement would require more accountable leadership and a genuine commitment to a safe and respectful work environment.
