Is this qualification right for me?

What will I learn?

The core units you complete will build the key skills needed to work as a pathology collector in the private pathology sector, medical clinics and hospital settings. To prepare for the workplace, you will be required to complete 35 hours of work placement where you'll learn how to safely take blood samples and collect other pathology specimens for laboratory analysis. You will also be trained in infection control, first aid and WHS principles. The electives you complete will depend on the institution you choose to study with.

Are there any entry requirements?

Typically, there are no educational prerequisites for this course, however most institutions will require you to be 18 years of age or older given this is the minimum age required to collect blood. Some institutions may set their own requirements for entry, which could include meeting set literacy and numeracy standards.

Where will it lead me?

This course prepares you for a role as a Pathology Collector or Laboratory Assistant within hospitals, pathology collection clinics and general practice medical clinics. It may also provide a pathway into the Diploma of Nursing if you are interested in becoming an Enrolled Nurse.

How much will it cost?

The final cost of this course will depend on a number of factors including your personal circumstances, previous experience and unit selections. As a general guide, if you are eligible for a subsidised place, it's likely to cost between $2,000 and $4,000. Most TAFEs do offer a concession rate, in which case, you could pay as little as $500. Alternatively, if you are required to pay a full fee, it could cost up to $6,000. To find the course price for you, it's best to contact the institution directly.
