What's it like to be an English as an Additional Language Teacher?
English as Additional Language teachers (EAL) are qualified teachers who support students where English is not their first language, such as refugees, international students and migrants, by providing an intensive, targeted program.
Tasks and duties
- Preparing lessons and materials for students beginning their English language learning by focusing on listening, reading, writing, vocabulary and grammar.
- Assessing and reporting on students’ proficiency in English and the progress they are making within the curriculum and learning frameworks.
- Creating an environment that maximises each individual’s participation, development and contribution.
How to become an English as an Additional Language Teacher
To work as an EAL teacher you’ll usually need to be a qualified primary or secondary teacher with current teacher registration or approval to teach in your state’s school system. You must also have completed an approved course of study.
