What's it like to be a Glazier?
Glaziers measure, cut, shape, fit and install glass in domestic/residential or commercial properties. The glass is often used in vehicles, mirrors, windows, doors, skylights, shower screens and splashbacks.
Tasks and duties
- Using drawings and plans to assess the requirements of the job, including the type of glass required, measuring, marking and cutting or drilling the glass.
- Installing glass, smoothing rough edges with belt sanders or smoothing wheels and trimming them as required.
- Ensuring that excess glass is disposed of safely and all products are inspected for defects or weakness.
How to become a Glazier
It is possible to work as a Glazier without formal qualifications, however a Certificate III is usually required and is often completed as part of an apprenticeship.
- 1.Undertake qualifications in glazing, such as a Certificate III in Glass and Glazing (MSF30418). These courses can be undertaken as an apprenticeship (usually part time over three years) or full time over one year. You may need to have completed a relevant pre-apprenticeship such as a Certificate II in Glass and Glazing (MSF20413).
- 2.Apply to become a certified and/or Master Glazier with the Australian Glass Glazing Association and ensure you have a Construction Induction Card (a White Card), which gives you access to any construction site in Australia.
- 3.Glaziers wishing to specialise can become glass bevellers, embossers, etchers or silverers.
