What's it like to be a Key Account Manager?
Key Account Managers are responsible for handling an organisation’s most important client accounts. The accounts they manage typically make up the highest percentage of the organisation’s income. Key Account Managers take the lead as primary point of contact for all client matters, manage the client’s initiatives internally and help to make the relationship a success.
Tasks and duties
- Developing a trusting relationship between key clients and the organisation.
- Understanding the client’s needs.
- Anticipating client needs.
- Managing the internal communications between clients and the teams in the organisation.
- Managing the account team assigned to work for the client.
- Negotiating contracts with the client and establishing initiative timelines.
- Managing client budgets.
- Acting as the voice of the customer when liaising with internal teams to ensure initiatives meet requirements.
- Liaise with the sales team to ensure maximum upselling and cross-selling is achieved.
How to become a Key Account Manager
You don’t need qualifications to get your foot in the door as an Account Manager, but they may help you get ahead.
- 1.Consider completing a Diploma of Business (BSB50120) at a TAFE or through a private training organisation.
- 2.Alternatively, consider completing a Bachelor degree majoring in Commerce, Business or Marketing. These courses take 3 years to complete, and you’ll need to have completed year 12 or gain admission through an alternative pathway.
- 3.Get your foot in the door in a sales role and learn on the job.
