What's it like to be a Merchandiser?
Merchandisers plan, coordinate and install promotional displays in retail stores. They install displays that follow seasonal change and current promotions offered by the retailer. They are responsible for the layout, display lighting and any other visual aspects of an in–store promotion. A Merchandiser plans promotional layouts with the goal of increasing sales for a seasonal collection or campaign. They may update and adjust the layout and selection of promotional materials during a campaign depending on sales performance.
Tasks and duties
- Determining selection of goods for seasonal collections and promotional events.
- Developing plans and sketches of proposed layout for approval.
- Coordinating and installing window and in–store displays using props, fabrics and signage.
- Arranging lighting installations to highlight promotional materials and fixtures.
- Developing schedule of promotional displays for approval.
- Assisting in training of in–store staff for promotional campaigns.
- Reviewing store sales figures and adjusting promotional displays to ensure best performance.
- Assisting with special projects and in–store promotions.
How to become a Merchandiser
It is possible to work as a Merchandiser without formal qualifications, although completing a Diploma of Visual Merchandising (SIR50217) or similar qualification may be an advantage. A strong interest in retail is beneficial.
