What's it like to be a Porter?
Porters carry luggage for guests. Porters can be found in hotels and motels, on ships and in transport terminals such as wharves, airports and train stations. They not only look after luggage, but direct guests to their rooms, cabins or berths and provide concierge services when necessary.
Tasks and duties
- Loading and unloading luggage from vehicles and trolleys.
- Tagging baggage and providing identification claim vouchers to guests.
- Showing guests to their rooms, cabins or berths.
- Explaining the features and facilities of rooms and services.
- Organising transport for guests, including taxis and rental cars.
- Giving directions and answering questions about the location and amenities.
- Carrying and loading the luggage of departing guests into cars, taxis and buses.
- Liaising with transport and tour operators.
- Parking and moving guest cars.
- Keeping the Porter environment tidy and organised.
How to become a Porter
There are no formal educational requirements to work as a Porter. It may be helpful to hold a full, unrestricted driver’s license.
- 1.Develop your communication and customer service skills, as you’ll be required to deliver exceptional service to guests.
- 2.Consider upskilling by completing a vocational qualification in hospitality, which will provide you with the knowledge to branch out in other roles in the industry.
