Assistant Educators assist teachers and students in classrooms. They give personalised attention to students who need extra support to facilitate their learning and development.
Tasks and duties
- Provide children personalised attention.
- Provide a secure, nurturing environment in the classroom.
- Communicate with families about the child’s involved in class activities each day, in consultation with the teacher.
- Assist the teacher by preparing materials, equipment and setting up.
- Provide feedback, information, concerns and process improvement ideas to the teacher.
- Translate early childhood theory into practical exercises and activities.
- Promote exploration and learning through play.
- Support children with emotional regulation issues to learn improved social skills.
- Support children with developmental difficulties with specific techniques.
How to become an Assistant Educator
To work as an Assistant Teacher in Australia, a qualification in education is desirable. This is typically a diploma-level qualification.
- 1.Undertake a qualification within the field of education. The entry-level qualification is a Certificate III in School Based Education Support (CHC30221).
- 2.There are many career progression opportunities for Assistant Teachers, including further study such as a degree-level qualification to become a qualified primary or secondary teacher or special education teacher.
