What's it like to be a Sales Assistant?
Sales Assistants work in shops, stores and wholesale establishments. They greet and help customers identify their needs in order to purchase goods and services to meet those needs. Sales Assistants are ambassadors for a particular store, establishment or product. They provide customers with an informative and helpful shopping experience, and may also assist with ongoing management of supplies, by participating in stocktakes and taking inventories.
Tasks and duties
- Understanding the range of goods and services that the store, shop or establishment offers.
- Providing customers with advice on product choice, price, recommendations on product use and care.
- Accepting different payment methods for goods and services.
- Stacking and restocking goods, displaying items, wrapping and packing goods sold.
How to become a Sales Assistant
Formal qualifications to work as a sales assistant in Australia are not required, with on-the-job training usually provided. However, a vocational qualification in retail services may be an advantage when you are applying for work as a Sales Assistant.
- 1.Gain work experience in the field, and undertake a qualification in retail services, such as a Certificate II in Retail Services (SIR20216). You may be required to obtain a police check before you begin work.
- 2.To extend your career within sales, it’s possible to work your way up the ladder and apply for in-store promotions to more senior roles, such as Retail Store Manager.
