What's it like to be a Visual Merchandiser?
Visual Merchandisers create floor plans and displays of products in shops and stores with the aim of creating displays that appeal to customers.
Tasks and duties
- Developing floor plans, window displays and special promotions to form a cohesive look for the store.
- Creating a budget for any special props or displays, and negotiating with managers for approval.
- Setting up displays, dressing mannequins, moving fixtures and fittings, and updating displays as required.
How to become a Visual Merchandiser
You don’t need any formal qualifications to work as a Visual Merchandiser, but many stores prefer employees with a qualification and/or experience in visual merchandising. It is common to enter the profession as a Retail Assistant.
- 1.Complete a qualification in visual merchandising, such as the Diploma of Visual Merchandising (SIR50212). This is usually a one-year course without minimum academic entry requirements.
- 2.If you want to further your career and specialise in retail design or exhibition design, you can apply to undertake a Bachelor of Design.
- 3.Visual merchandisers with substantial experience and/or higher qualifications can progress to team leader or visual merchandising manager.
