What’s it like working at Anglicare Southern Queensland?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees at Anglicare Southern Queensland appreciate the meaningful and purposeful work, particularly supporting vulnerable Queenslanders, young people and older adults. Many reviewers highlight the supportive and dedicated colleagues they work with, noting that teams are diverse, collaborative and genuinely care about clients. The work/life balance is rated positively, with flexibility, hybrid working options and set rosters. Employees find building relationships with clients to be one of the most rewarding aspects of the role. The organisation is recognised as values-driven and for-purpose, with a compassionate culture centred on supporting the community. Additionally, pay rates and salary packaging are considered excellent.

However, there are some potential challenges. Management and leadership approaches vary across the organisation, with some employees noting inconsistency in direction, experience levels and support. Some employees have experienced workplace culture challenges, including perceptions of favouritism and difficulty voicing concerns in certain teams. The organisation can feel highly bureaucratic and compliance-focused, with some employees noting that processes lack clarity and structure. Workloads can be demanding at times, particularly in community services roles involving complex needs and system pressures. Some employees have noted that documentation systems and technology can be outdated, leading to double handling of paperwork, though updates are reportedly underway. As a large organisation, it can take time for new employees to understand the full scope of services and navigate the structure.

A values-driven organisation with a supportive culture where the work feels meaningful
The good thingsWorking at Anglicare Southern Queensland has been a really meaningful experience. I’ve found it to be a values-driven organisation that genuinely cares about supporting Queenslanders, so the work has felt very purposeful to me. The culture is compassionate, collaborative and supportive. There are also lots of opportunities to learn and build on your skills, especially around areas like trauma-informed practice and working with people with complex needs. I’ve had the opportunity to move into work across different sectors within Anglicare, including out-of-home care and youth justice. Leadership in both of these areas has been flexible and supportive of personal growth.
The challengesLike most roles in the community services sector, the work can be challenging at times because of the complexity of the work and pressures on the system. But overall it’s a rewarding place to work if you’re motivated by helping people and being part of a team that cares about the community.

Good mission, but overshadowed by rigid management, heavy bureaucracy and difficult culture.
The good thingsThe work itself is meaningful and focused on supporting young people navigating the youth justice system. Many frontline staff were dedicated and genuinely committed to making a difference. Strong working relationships developed within the team, with middle management leaders making a genuine effort to foster a culture of support, integrity and trust. Being involved in the early stages of a large pilot program also provided exposure to complex service delivery, stakeholder engagement and program development.
The challengesThe management structure felt exceedingly top-heavy and highly risk-focused, with a strong emphasis on compliance and auditing but limited structured guidance on how to practically meet these requirements. Role clarity between frontline positions was still evolving, creating tension within teams and required clearer direction from program leadership. Decision-making also appeared highly centralised, meaning frontline insights and suggestions were not always incorporated as the program model developed. The overall organisational culture felt highly bureaucratic and ultra compliance-driven, with limited flexibility and few opportunities for leadership mentoring or development. Constructive feedback was not always received in a collaborative way, with conversations often shifting toward alignment rather than open problem-solving.
