What’s it like working at Australian Retirement Trust?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees at Australian Retirement Trust consistently praise the quality of colleagues and the supportive work culture, noting that professional relationships and friendships are a major strength. The flexible working arrangements and hybrid work options are highly valued, along with the work/life balance that includes wellbeing leave. The modern office environment is frequently highlighted as excellent, and employees appreciate the competitive pay and benefits, including additional superannuation contributions.

However, there are some potential challenges. The merger between Sunsuper and QSuper has created integration challenges affecting processes and organisational structure. Some employees have noted that promotion opportunities may be limited and influenced by personal connections. Certain roles are heavily KPI-driven with high performance expectations, and workload can be substantial, with some staff working unpaid overtime. Additionally, systems and technology could be modernised, training and support could be enhanced for complex roles, and projects and programmes can be disorganised at times.

The organisation needs to go through a structured rebuild from its foundations. Very Chaotic.
The good thingsSome very well intentioned people.
The challengesVery dysfunctional organisation. A lot of overhead, white noise and missing structure/business rules.

If you want career progression then be sure to make friends with the hiring managers and leaders.
The good thingsWhen it was Qsuper we had a very competent team that was well supported by the business. We had flexible work arrangements, and even though there were peaks and dips the team didn't feel like they were breathing underwater. During the pandemic the team became further engaged and supportive the physical separation meant we formed stronger remote connections. The people and supportive managers are what made this a fantastic place to work.
The challengesLeading into the merge announcement, staff were quietly retrenched or had contracts ended, right accross the business, while remaining teame absorbed the functions that didn't actually go away. Vacancies weren't filled where needed. Post-merge the pressure on staff increased. ART has enjoyed significant growth, but the house isn't in order to support this growth. Staff frequently work after hours unpaid to keep on top of demands. Technology and systems are archaic for a fund this size, adding to the time pressures. Project after project and money spent on resourcing growth and change, but the results aren't beneficial for those doing the work. Qsuper used to prioritise recruitment and promotion from within as we have highly capable and qualified people. Now roles including management are unfilled, or recruited directly via connections to hiring managers, often without advertising the position or taking EOI from within. This repeating pattern neglects staff development and recognition.
People & Impact team memberThank you for sharing your experience and for recognising the strong people and leadership that existed prior to and during the merger. We acknowledge your feedback on the challenges that followed, including increased workload pressures, systems, resourcing, and perceptions around internal progression and transparency. Integrating two large organisations while supporting significant growth has created complexity, and we recognise this has been a difficult period for many. Strengthening our foundations, improving ways of working, and supporting fair development opportunities remain key priorities as we continue to evolve.

A good place to work if you're looking for flexibility and a balance of working from home and office
The good thingsFlexibility and the ability to work from home or the office. The office space is lovely and the people there are genuinely lovely people.
The challengesProjects and programs are very disorganised. Lots of new people coming and going and very hierarchical causing delays and bottlenecks. There seems to be a lot of consultants who don't understand the culture being directed by contractors that don't really know the organisation either so it feels like the blind leading the blind at times.
People & Impact team memberThank you for sharing your experience and for highlighting the flexibility, hybrid working arrangements, and the positive, supportive people at Australian Retirement Trust. We acknowledge your feedback regarding the challenges within projects and programs, including complexity, hierarchy, and the impact of frequent change. As we continue to grow and evolve, we recognise the importance of clearer ways of working, stronger alignment, and ensuring our teams and partners are well connected to our culture and purpose. We appreciate you taking the time to provide this feedback and for your ongoing contribution as a member of our team.
