Why study this course

Biotechnology applies scientific and engineering principles to living organisms in order to produce products and services of value to society. It is used in processes ranging from cheese production, brewing, and wastewater management, through to drug design and gene therapy. The program explores the discovery, understanding, improvement, and development, of products or activities of micro-organisms, plants, and animals. The discipline combines elements from many areas such as molecular genetics, microbiology, immunology, physics, chemistry, engineering and mathematics.

Biotech is really interesting, relevant and employable. There is a lot of emphasis on the drug development side of it which doesn't interest me in the slightest and that was difficult. Some lecturers are difficult but they're not many. Because of thr addition of the honours year there's a lot of emphasis on going into research and very little about other pathways. The admin and support team for biotech is lovely and very helpful.

It was a well put together course that had the right elements of thoery in it. When they changed it to making the Honours year compulsory, this enabled you to get a greater practical experience as if in the workforce.

Completely hands-off & not related to the 'technology' aspect at all - I expected to be dealing with a mixture of physics and biology, but instead it was focussed on biomechanics and physics involved only in bodily movements. I was sorely disappointed with this course as it sounded so cool, but was a total dud.
