What's it like to be a Civil Estimator?
Civil Estimators prepare and deliver estimates, budgets and cost plans for civil engineering projects. Civil engineering projects include the design, construction and maintenance of structures such as roads, railways, buildings, water reservoirs, subdivisions, airports, bridges, sewer systems, tunnels and dams.
Tasks and duties
- Interpreting plans, regulations and codes of practice.
- Calculating costs and estimating timelines with a high level of accuracy.
- Liaising with governments, clients and stakeholders.
- Working closely with construction managers, architects and surveyors to plan and develop a budget for building projects.
- Using software to calculate the cost and timeframes for a project, check subcontractor quotes and submit tenders.
- Planning, reviewing and delivering final estimate of budget and cost plans.
How to become a Civil Estimator
It is possible to work as a Civil Estimator without formal training, however most employers prefer candidates with qualifications in Civil Construction Management or a background in Civil Engineering. Extensive experience in the industry is also usually required.
- 1.Hold a White Card. You can apply for a White Card online, and it is mandatory to hold one in order to work on a construction site in Australia.
- 2.Complete a qualification in Estimation. This could be a Certificate IV in Building Project Support (Estimator) (CPC40320), or a Bachelor degree majoring in Civil Engineering.
- 3.Build your industry experience in a junior role – many Civil Estimators begin their careers as an Estimating Assistant.
